Despite the fact that brown rot is the most economically important disease in stone fruits, the relationship between mechanical stress and infection has never been explored. Thus, to explore this connection, we carried out four experiments linking nectarine wounding and M. laxa infection. First, we evaluated a possible systemic reaction of the fruit to wounding that could impact the M. laxa infection. Afterward, we study the impact of the fruit in the environment on M. laxa colonies grown in vitro. Subsequently, we tested the disease susceptibility of fruits inoculated with M. laxa placed in the same environment as wounded fruits. Finally, in the fourth experiment, the effect of wounding on the subsequent fruit infections was evaluated at three fruit stages. As a result, we observed that there was no evidence of a fruit systemic reaction to wounding and M. laxa infection. In the study related to the impact of the fruit in the environment of M. laxa, the findings suggest that M. laxa “perceived” the fruit’s presence, resulting in accelerated in vitro growth. Moreover, the presence of wounded fruits in the box increased the susceptibility to brown rot. Inoculated fruits showed a delayed and reduced infection 7 h after being wounded, during the second stage of fruit development (15–19 weeks after full bloom). Moreover, a red reaction associated with inoculation was detected immediately after the fruits were wounded. Nine phenolic compounds exclusively related to the red areas were extracted, while six other compounds were present in higher proportions. These compounds may be actively involved in plant–pathogen interactions and the activation of metabolic pathways involved in nectarine susceptibility/resistance to M. laxa.

Understanding nutrient dynamics within a peach orchard is fundamental to the development of accurate nutrient management practices. The present study investigated the nutrient uptake and redistribution in a 14-years-old commercial orchard in the Po valley. At the end of the experiment, trees were harvested, biomass and organ nutrient concentration were determined. Skeleton and roots accounted for the highest plant biomass, followed by fruits at harvest, pruned wood and abscised leaves; thinned fruits were less than 1 kg tree-1. The difference between the amounts of nutrients in leaves sampled in summer and in autumn (at abscission) was used to estimate the fraction of nutrients remobilized during the vegetative season inside the tree. The decrease of N, P, S, Cu, Mn and Zn concentration in abscised, compared to summer-sampled leaves was the result of the translocation of nutrients into fruits and storage organs. Nutrient circulation in a commercial nectarine orchard was calculated by determination of the fractions of each nutrient recycled (sum of nutrients in abscised leaves, thinned fruits and pruned wood) and remobilized (sum of nutrients in fruits at harvest, roots and skeleton). In our experimental conditions, on average, nectarine Stark RedGold showed an annual request of (in kg ha-1) 100, 17, 73, 129, 16, and 6 of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S, respectively. More than half of these quantities were recycled in the orchard and returned back to the soil; consequently, if the nutrient use efficiency is maximized, the fertilization of nectarine requires only small amount of external inputs.

The study was conducted during the period 2017 – 2018 at the Agricultural Experimental Station – Khan Krum, Shumen region. The experimental orchard was established in the spring of 2011. The following nectarine cultivars were studied: Fantasia, Golden Grand, Morsiani 51, Cassiopeia and Fairlane grafted on a seedling rootstock (Elberta) and clonal GF 677, as well as the frost – resistant dessert-type cultivar Redhaven. In the period 2017 – 2018, negative temperatures were reported, at the end of March and at the beginning of April (-3.6°C and -5.0 °C respectively)which coincided with the full blooming phenological phase; as a result of which the blossoms froze (76 – 100%). A relatively low percentage of frozen blossoms was observed in cultivars grafted on rootstock GF 677. In 2017, the blossom damage was relatively low and yields were obtained, unlike in 2018. Negative spring temperatures had a negative impact on productivity if blossom damage percentage exceeded 80%.

Designed during Ecopeche I (2013 – 2018) program, nectarine systems have been planted in 2019 as part of a multi-site experimentation of innovating combinations of levers which allow to reduce synthetic phytosanitary products use. This study presents annual evaluation of the 4 systems set up at Sica Centrex, some of which contain agro-ecological infrastructures such as flower strips to attract auxiliaries or plastic sheeting to manage weeds. Agronomic indicators (related to growth, tree productivity, pest pressure and treatment frequency indices (TFI)), environmental performance (about interactions between flower strip, auxiliaries and pests) and economic results (including costs and amortizations) are gathered to draw up a comparative assessment of these systems. At the end of this season 2022, pesticide reduction reached 100% in ECO, 88% in AB and 33% in ZR compared to reference conduct. Compared to reference marketable yield, ECO had a loss of 44%, AB of 48%, and ZR of 8%. Alternative systems with organic amendment and/or alternative protection have accumulated stunted growths for lower yields compared to conventional conduct. Substitution of chemical pesticides by biopesticides induces synthetic TFI drops, but does not reach equal protection.Flower strips had been sown 3 years ago and are invaded for more than half by weeds. Only four species (Lobularia maritima, Calendula officinalis, Anthemis tinctoria and Achylea millefolium) remain to maintain good surfaces, qualified as the hardiest species of the mixture. There is a positive correlation between diversification loss of flower strips and weed invasion ; flower strip attraction is mainly linked to available floral surface. Flower strips have attracted auxiliaries and promoted biocontrol service of aphid suppression, for effective but late management, and does not prevent from damages. Flower strips offer an action lever against aphid as important as there is currently no fully effective biopesticides. Observations of hoverfly predation all around the ...
