الوصف: Abstract Background This project (named Reinvent) aimed to promote Public Involvement (PI) in health research. Academics worked with a community group, the Eloquent Praise & Empowerment Dance Company, to develop a community partnership with young people from Black African, Asian and Caribbean heritage communities. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the Reinvent project for key learnings on how to engage and build partnerships with young people from Black African, Asian and Caribbean heritage communities. Methods Reinvent developed a steering group which consisted of five young people, one academic, a Race Equality Ambassador and the Director of Eloquent. The steering group co-produced an agenda for two workshops and the evaluation tools used. The content of the workshops included drama exercises, discussions on physical and mental health, nutrition and school-life, short introductions to the concepts of research and PI, and group work to critique and improve a video currently used to promote PI in health research to young people. The evaluation tools included using the ‘Cube’ evaluation framework, video-blogging and collecting anonymous feedback. Findings The responses to the ‘Cube’ evaluation framework were positive across all four domains (agenda, voice, contribute change) in both workshops. A few of the young people described having a better understanding of the meaning and practice of PI in a video-blog. The anonymous feedback suggested that the workshops had increased young people’s confidence in sharing their thoughts and opinions about health and PI. Conclusion Reinvent has shown that academic institutions and young people from an under-served community can partner to co-design workshops and apply evaluation tools. Working with young people in an environment in which they were comfortable, and by researchers joining in with the activities that the young people enjoyed (such as dance), enabled more informal and open conversations to develop. More work is needed to build upon this project so that young people can feel confident and supported to get involved in PI activities relating to research.

الوصف: Despite the healthcare community's increased efforts to reduce health disparities in the United States, undocumented immigrants (UIs) remain one of the highest at-risk populations. Health and public policies, societal and healthcare worker bias, and fear of deportation are among barriers to healthcare access, resulting in increasingly poor health and health outcomes. Christian nurses, guided by biblical principles and the American Nurses Association's Code of Ethics for Nurses, can advocate for UIs' healthcare needs by supporting and promoting more inclusive institutional and government policies.

الوصف: In "interlude: little brother," a work of autobiographical criticism, Yurok-Dine scholar Natalie Knight recalls her experiences growing up in a white rural community in western Washington state with her two black siblings, all three children adopted by white parents. Knight felt an obligation to protect her little brother from the anti-Black racism he encountered on a daily basis at his school and in their town by exposing him to books, films, and music by Black creators whose perspectives reflected his experiences. Yet Knight, a young Indigenous woman, did not receive the same kind of guidance or protection. Through reading works by Black and Red Power Indigenous authors Knight found a way to put into words and contextualize her experiences. At the same time, the antagonisms between activist works and European traditions of philosophy, political science, and history, combined with the invisibility of Indigenous intellectual traditions in these discourses, created a profound sense of dissonance in Knight. Finding ways to navigate these traditions of thought within a framework of social justice energizes Knight's search for a language and critical framework that addresses her experiences and provides context for the histories she carries.

الوصف: The principle aim of the study was to demonstrate the value of performing delayed reassessment in the diagnosis of idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) and selection of suitable candidates for ventriculoperitoneal shunting (VPS). Thirty-one consecutive patients underwent the NPH protocol at the Flinders Medical Centre between March 2017 and November 2018. The protocol involved mobility and cognitive testing with reassessment post high-volume cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) removal at 24 h and 48 h. The Assessment of Quality of Life 6D (AQoL-6D) questionnaire and International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire – Urinary Incontinence Short Form (ICIQ-UI SF) were completed and repeated again at 6 weeks and 6 months post shunting. Results were analysed to determine the significance of delayed reassessment. Twenty patients (64.5%) underwent insertion of a VPS on the basis of objective improvements and specific criteria. Of these, 6 patients (30%) were shunted based on delayed reassessment at 48 h post CSF removal. Continued improvements were seen for all mobility and cognitive tests from baseline to 48 h post CSF removal. At 6 weeks and 6 months post shunting, there was an overall mean improvement in AQoL-6D and ICIQ-UI SF for the cohort and the improvement was also observed in the subgroup of patients who met shunt criteria at 48 h post CSF removal. In the diagnosis of shunt-responsive idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus, delayed reassessment post CSF removal improves sensitivity and is therefore important.

الوصف: The purpose of this study was to investigate normative and age-related differences in trunk and pelvis kinematics and intersegmental coordination during sagittal plane flexion–extension. Trunk and pelvis kinematics were recorded while 76 participants performed a maximal range of motion task in the sagittal plane. Cross-correlation was calculated to determine the phase lag between adjacent segment motion, and coupling angles were calculated using vector coding and classified into one of 4 coordination patterns: in-phase, antiphase, superior, and inferior phase. A 2-way mixed-model multivariate analysis of variance was used to compare lumbar spine and pelvis angular kinematics, phase lags, and cross-correlation coefficients between groups. Young participants exhibited greater trunk range of motion compared with middle-aged participants. The lumbar spine and pelvis were predominantly rotating with minimum phase lag during flexion and extension movement for both age groups, and differences in coordination between the groups were seen during hyperextension and return to upright position. In conclusion, middle-aged adults displayed lower range of motion but maintained similar movement patterns to young adults, which could be attributed to protective mechanisms. Healthy lumbar and pelvis movement patterns are important to understand and need to be quantified as a baseline, which can be used to develop rehabilitation protocols for individuals with spinal ailments.

الوصف: The incidence of dysphagia following anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) reported in the literature varies due to differences in measures and time intervals applied, ranging from nearly 3/4 at 2 weeks to 13% at 12 months. The most commonly used dysphagia scales remain subjective, non-validated, and do not capture functional impact. Various risk factors have been identified, though few consistently reproduced and none studied in an Australasian context. The aims of this study were to use objective and validated measures, assess both traditional and novel risk factors, and determine the impact of dysphagia on dietary status, length of stay and complications. METHODS: Twenty-nine adults undergoing ACDF for degenerative pathologies were enrolled between March and November 2015 in an Australian institution. Bazaz dysphagia scale, Dysphagia short questionnaire, 3-ounce swallow test and dietary status were assessed preoperatively, and 2 days and 6 weeks postoperatively. Descriptive statistics were used to characterise the study sample and logistic regression modelling performed on risk factors. RESULTS: Dysphagia incidence ranged from 85% on day-2 Dysphagia short questionnaire to zero on 6-week 3-ounce swallow. All measures increased at 2 days and fell by 6 weeks. Failing day-2 3-ounce swallow was the only measure associated with modifications in solids (P = 0.06), showing significant linear correlation (P = 0.02). Respiratory comorbidity increased risk of failing day-2 3-ounce swallow by more than 32-fold (OR: 32.4; 95% CI: 1.8 - 587.7; P = 0.019) and scoring moderate or severe on Bazaz by almost 10-times (OR: 9.3; 95% CI: 0.9 - 95.95; P = 0.061). Psychiatric history also increased risk of failing day-2 3-ounce swallow by more than 10-fold (OR: 10.9; 95% CI: 1 - 123.7; P = 0.054). Failing 3-ounce swallow increased length of stay (5 versus 7 days; P = 0.013). CONCLUSIONS: Incidence of dysphagia following ACDF was dependent on the measure used, though all improved over time. The 3-ounce swallow test correlated with dietary modification and length of stay, while respiratory comorbidity posed the most significant risk. This may identify a group of patients who may benefit from early intervention.

الوصف: It has been shown that the novel gel matrix, PCR Purity Plus which consists of a vinyl-polymer of polyacrylamide, provides a superior and rapid means of separating DNA fragments. As this product has been discontinued, the two new commercial versions of this matrix (MDE® and GeneAmp®) with PCR Purity Plus were compared. Optimal conditions for resolving DNA fingerprint profiles for both matrices were defined. Both MDE and GeneAmp gels provided a clear separation of DNA fragments. However, the profiles obtained on GeneAmp gel were closest to that of PCR Purity Plus. These results should be useful to DNA fingerprinting studies where it is critical to obtain a clear resolution of complex DNA profiles.
