الوصف: Recent discoveries of Earth-sized planets transiting nearby M dwarfs have made it possible to characterize the atmospheres of terrestrial planets via follow-up spectroscopic observations. However, the number of such planets receiving low insolation is still small, limiting our ability to understand the diversity of the atmospheric composition and climates of temperate terrestrial planets. We report the discovery of an Earth-sized planet transiting the nearby (12 pc) inactive M3.0 dwarf Gliese 12 (TOI-6251) with an orbital period ( P _orb ) of 12.76 days. The planet, Gliese 12 b, was initially identified as a candidate with an ambiguous P _orb from TESS data. We confirmed the transit signal and P _orb using ground-based photometry with MuSCAT2 and MuSCAT3, and validated the planetary nature of the signal using high-resolution images from Gemini/NIRI and Keck/NIRC2 as well as radial velocity (RV) measurements from the InfraRed Doppler instrument on the Subaru 8.2 m telescope and from CARMENES on the CAHA 3.5 m telescope. X-ray observations with XMM-Newton showed the host star is inactive, with an X-ray-to-bolometric luminosity ratio of $\mathrm{log}{L}_{{\rm{X}}}/{L}_{\mathrm{bol}}\approx -5.7$ . Joint analysis of the light curves and RV measurements revealed that Gliese 12 b has a radius of 0.96 ± 0.05 R _⊕ , a 3 σ mass upper limit of 3.9 M _⊕ , and an equilibrium temperature of 315 ± 6 K assuming zero albedo. The transmission spectroscopy metric (TSM) value of Gliese 12 b is close to the TSM values of the TRAPPIST-1 planets, adding Gliese 12 b to the small list of potentially terrestrial, temperate planets amenable to atmospheric characterization with JWST.

الوصف: Sub-Neptunes with radii of 2–3 R _⊕ are intermediate in size between rocky planets and Neptune-sized planets. The orbital properties and bulk compositions of transiting sub-Neptunes provide clues to the formation and evolution of close-in small planets. In this paper, we present the discovery and follow-up of four sub-Neptunes orbiting M dwarfs (TOI-782, TOI-1448, TOI-2120, and TOI-2406), three of which were newly validated by ground-based follow-up observations and statistical analyses. TOI-782 b, TOI-1448 b, TOI-2120 b, and TOI-2406 b have radii of ${R}_{{\rm{p}}}={2.740}_{-0.079}^{+0.082}\,{R}_{\oplus }$ , ${2.769}_{-0.068}^{+0.073}\,{R}_{\oplus }$ , 2.120 ± 0.067 R _⊕ , and ${2.830}_{-0.066}^{+0.068}\,{R}_{\oplus }$ and orbital periods of P = 8.02, 8.11, 5.80, and 3.08 days, respectively. Doppler monitoring with the Subaru/InfraRed Doppler instrument led to 2 σ upper limits on the masses of

الوصف: We present the discoveries of two giant plants orbiting the red-giant-branch star HD 112570 and the red-clump star HD 154391, based on the radial-velocity (RV) measurements from the Xinglong station and Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. Spectroscopic and asteroseismic analyses suggest that HD 112570 has a mass of 1.15 ± 0.12 M _☉ , a radius of 9.85 ± 0.23 R _☉ , a metallicity [Fe/H] of −0.46 ± 0.1, and $\mathrm{log}\,g$ of 2.47 ± 0.1. With the joint analysis of RV and Hipparcos-Gaia astrometry, we obtain a dynamical mass of ${M}_{{\rm{p}}}={3.42}_{-0.84}^{+1.4}\ {M}_{\mathrm{Jup}}$ , a period of $P={2615}_{-77}^{+85}$ days, and a moderate eccentricity of $e={0.20}_{-0.14}^{+0.16}$ for the Jovian planet HD 112570 b. For HD 154391, it has a mass of 2.07 ± 0.03 M _☉ , a radius of 8.56 ± 0.05 R _☉ , a metallicity [Fe/H] of 0.07 ± 0.1, and $\mathrm{log}\,g$ of 2.86 ± 0.1. The super-Jupiter HD 154391 b has a mass of ${M}_{{\rm{p}}}={9.1}_{-1.9}^{+2.8}\ {M}_{\mathrm{Jup}}$ , a period of $P={5163}_{-57}^{+60}$ days, and an eccentricity of $e={0.20}_{-0.04}^{+0.04}$ . We found that HD 154391 b has one of the longest orbital periods among those ever discovered orbiting evolved stars, which may provide a valuable case in our understanding of planetary formation at wider orbits. Moreover, while a mass gap at 4 M _Jup seems to be present in the population of giant stars, there appear to be no significant differences in the distribution of metallicity among giant planets with masses above or below this threshold. Finally, the origin of the abnormal accumulation near 2 au for planets around large evolved stars ( R _⋆ > 21 R _☉ ), remains unclear.

الوصف: Observations of the kilonova from the neutron star merger event GW170817 opened a way to study r -process nucleosynthesis directly using neutron star mergers. It is, however, challenging to identify individual elements in kilonova spectra due to a lack of complete atomic data, in particular at near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. In this paper, we demonstrate that spectra of chemically peculiar stars with enhanced heavy-element abundances can provide us with an excellent astrophysical laboratory for kilonova spectra. We show that the photosphere of the late B-type, chemically peculiar star HR 465 has similar lanthanide abundances and ionization degrees with those in the line-forming region in a kilonova at ∼2.5 days after the merger. The NIR spectrum of HR 465 taken with Subaru/IRD indicates that Ce iii lines give the strongest absorption feature around 16000 Å and there are no other comparably strong transitions around these lines. The Ce iii lines nicely match with the broad absorption feature at 14500 Å observed in GW170817 with a blueshift of v = 0.1 c , which supports recent identification of this feature as Ce iii by Domoto et al.

الوصف: Individual vibrational band spectroscopy presents an opportunity to examine exoplanet atmospheres in detail, by distinguishing where the vibrational state populations of molecules differ from the current assumption of a Boltzmann distribution. Here, retrieving vibrational bands of OH in exoplanet atmospheres is explored using the hot Jupiter WASP-33b as an example. We simulate low-resolution spectroscopic data for observations with the JWST's NIRSpec instrument and use high-resolution observational data obtained from the Subaru InfraRed Doppler instrument (IRD). Vibrational band–specific OH cross-section sets are constructed and used in retrievals on the (simulated) low- and (real) high-resolution data. Low-resolution observations are simulated for two WASP-33b emission scenarios: under the assumption of local thermal equilibrium (LTE) and with a toy non-LTE model for vibrational excitation of selected bands. We show that mixing ratios for individual bands can be retrieved with sufficient precision to allow the vibrational population distributions of the forward models to be reconstructed. A fit for the Boltzmann distribution in the LTE case shows that the vibrational temperature is recoverable in this manner. For high-resolution, cross-correlation applications, we apply the individual vibrational band analysis to an IRD spectrum of WASP-33b, applying an “unpeeling” technique. Individual detection significances for the two strongest bands are shown to be in line with Boltzmann-distributed vibrational state populations, consistent with the effective temperature of the WASP-33b atmosphere reported previously. We show the viability of this approach for analyzing the individual vibrational state populations behind observed and simulated spectra, including reconstructing state population distributions.

الوصف: Remote sensing of the Earth has demonstrated that photosynthesis is traceable as the vegetation red edge (VRE), which is a steep rise in the reflection spectrum of vegetation, and as solar-induced fluorescence. This study examines the detectability of biological fluorescence from two types of photosynthetic pigments, chlorophylls (Chls) and bacteriochlorophylls (BChls), on Earthlike planets with oxygen-rich/poor and anoxic atmospheres around the Sun and M dwarfs. Atmospheric absorption, such as H _2 O, CH _4 , O _2 , and O _3 , and the VRE obscure the fluorescence emissions from Chls and BChls. We find that the BChl-based fluorescence for wavelengths of 1000–1100 nm, assuming the spectrum of BChl b –bearing purple bacteria, could provide a suitable biosignature, but only in the absence of water cloud coverage or other strong absorbers near 1000 nm. The Chl fluorescence is weaker for several reasons, e.g., spectral blending with the VRE. The apparent reflectance excess is greatly increased in both the Chl and BChl cases around TRAPPIST-1, due to the fluorescence and stellar absorption lines. This could be a promising feature for detecting the fluorescence around ultracool red dwarfs using follow-up ground-based observations at high spectral resolution; however, this would require a long time around Sunlike stars, even for a LUVOIR-like space mission. Moreover, the simultaneous detection of fluorescence and the VRE is the key to identifying traces of photosynthesis, because absorption, reflectance, and fluorescence are physically connected. For further validation of the fluorescence detection, the nonlinear response of biological fluorescence as a function of light intensity could be considered.

الوصف: The Subaru telescope is currently performing a strategic program (SSP) using the high-precision near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer IRD to search for exoplanets around nearby mid/late M dwarfs via radial velocity (RV) monitoring. As part of the observing strategy for the exoplanet survey, signatures of massive companions such as RV trends are used to reduce the priority of those stars. However, this RV information remains useful for studying the stellar multiplicity of nearby M dwarfs. To search for companions around such “deprioritized” M dwarfs, we observed 14 IRD-SSP targets using Keck/NIRC2 with pyramid wave-front sensing at NIR wavelengths, leading to high sensitivity to substellar-mass companions within a few arcseconds. We detected two new companions (LSPM J1002+1459 B and LSPM J2204+1505 B) and two new candidates that are likely companions (LSPM J0825+6902 B and LSPM J1645+0444 B), as well as one known companion. Including two known companions resolved by the IRD fiber injection module camera, we detected seven (four new) companions at projected separations between ∼2 and 20 au in total. A comparison of the colors with the spectral library suggests that LSPM J2204+1505 B and LSPM J0825+6902 B are located at the boundary between late M and early L spectral types. Our deep high-contrast imaging for targets where no bright companions were resolved did not reveal any additional companion candidates. The NIRC2 detection limits could constrain potential substellar-mass companions (∼10–75 M _Jup ) at 10 au or further. The failure with Keck/NIRC2 around the IRD-SSP stars having significant RV trends makes these objects promising targets for further RV monitoring or deeper imaging with the James Webb Space Telescope to search for smaller-mass companions below the NIRC2 detection limits.

الوصف: Terrestrial exoplanets orbiting M-dwarf stars are promising targets for transmission spectroscopy with existing or near-future instrumentation. The atmospheric composition of such rocky planets remains an open question, especially given the high X-ray and ultraviolet flux from their host M dwarfs that can drive atmospheric escape. The 1.3 R _⊕ exoplanet GJ 486b ( T _eq ∼ 700 K), orbiting an M3.5 star, is expected to have one of the strongest transmission spectroscopy signals among known terrestrial exoplanets. We observed three transits of GJ 486b using three different high-resolution spectrographs: IRD on Subaru, IGRINS on Gemini-South, and SPIRou on the Canada–France–Hawai’i Telescope. We searched for atmospheric absorption from a wide variety of molecular species via the cross-correlation method, but did not detect any robust atmospheric signals. Nevertheless, our observations are sufficiently sensitive to rule out several clear atmospheric scenarios via injection and recovery tests, and extend comparative exoplanetology into the terrestrial regime. Our results suggest that GJ 486b does not possess a clear H _2 /He-dominated atmosphere, nor a clear 100% water-vapor atmosphere. Other secondary atmospheres with high mean molecular weights or H _2 /He-dominated atmospheres with clouds remain possible. Our findings provide further evidence suggesting that terrestrial planets orbiting M-dwarf stars may experience significant atmospheric loss.

الوصف: We report on the discovery of an Earth-sized transiting planet ( R _p = 1.015 ± 0.051 R _⊕ ) in a P = 4.02 day orbit around K2-415 (EPIC 211414619), an M5V star at 22 pc. The planet candidate was first identified by analyzing the light-curve data obtained by the K2 mission, and it is here shown to exist in the most recent data from TESS. Combining the light curves with the data secured by our follow-up observations, including high-resolution imaging and near-infrared spectroscopy with IRD, we rule out false-positive scenarios, finding a low false-positive probability of 2 × 10 ^−4 . Based on IRD’s radial velocities of K2-415, which were sparsely taken over three years, we obtain a planet mass of 3.0 ± 2.7 M _⊕ ( M _p < 7.5 M _⊕ at 95% confidence) for K2-415b. Being one of the lowest-mass stars (≈0.16 M _⊙ ) known to host an Earth-sized transiting planet, K2-415 will be an interesting target for further follow-up observations, including additional radial velocity monitoring and transit spectroscopy.
