الوصف: The quartz tuning fork used as an acoustic sensor in quartz-enhanced photo-acoustic spectroscopy gas detection systems is usually read out by means of a transimpedance preamplifier based on a low-noise operational amplifier closed in a feedback loop. The gain–bandwidth product of the operational amplifier used in the circuit is a key parameter which must be properly chosen to guarantee that the circuit works as expected. Here, we demonstrate that if the value of this parameter is not sufficiently large, the response of the preamplifier exhibits a peak at a frequency which does not coincide with the series resonant frequency of the quartz tuning fork. If this peak frequency is selected for modulating the laser bias current and is also used as the reference frequency of the lock-in amplifier, a penalty results in terms of signal-to-noise ratio at the output of the QEPAS sensor. This worsens the performance of the gas sensing system in terms of ultimate detection limits. We show that this happens when the front-end preamplifier of the quartz tuning fork is based on some amplifier models that are typically used for such application, both when the integration time of the lock-in amplifier filter is long, to boost noise rejection, and when it is short, in order to comply with a relevant measurement rate.

الوصف: Quartz tuning forks (QTFs) are employed as sensitive elements for gas sensing applications implementing quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy. Therefore, proper design of the QTF read-out electronics is required to optimize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and in turn, the minimum detection limit of the gas concentration. In this work, we present a theoretical study of the SNR trend in a voltage-mode read-out of QTFs, mainly focusing on the effects of (i) the noise contributions of both the QTF-equivalent resistor and the input bias resistor RL of the preamplifier, (ii) the operating frequency, and (iii) the bandwidth (BW) of the lock-in amplifier low-pass filter. A MATLAB model for the main noise contributions was retrieved and then validated by means of SPICE simulations. When the bandwidth of the lock-in filter is sufficiently narrow (BW = 0.5 Hz), the SNR values do not strongly depend on both the operating frequency and RL values. On the other hand, when a wider low-pass filter bandwidth is employed (BW = 5 Hz), a sharp SNR peak close to the QTF parallel-resonant frequency is found for large values of RL (RL > 2 MΩ), whereas for small values of RL (RL < 2 MΩ), the SNR exhibits a peak around the QTF series-resonant frequency.

الوصف: Due to the peculiar characteristics of SiPM sensors in terms of equivalent capacitance, gain and fast rise-time response, in several applications classic readout solutions for radiation detectors are not able to provide optimal performance. Thus, several ad hoc readout approaches have been developed to fully exploit the favourable features of this kind of detectors. In this note the main requirements for the SiPM readout electronics are discussed, for both energy and time measurements, in the light of the detector model, and an overview of the main architectures commonly employed is provided, along with a set of relevant design examples.

الوصف: A prototype of a new-generation readout ASIC targeting High-Luminosity (HL) LHC pixel detector upgrades has been designed and fabricated as part of the Italian INFN CHIPIX65 project using a commercial 65 nm CMOS technology. This demonstrator, hereinafter referred to as CHIPIX-FE0, is composed of a matrix of 64 × 64 pixels with 50 μm × 50 μm pixel size embedding two different architectures of analog front-ends working in parallel. Several irradiation campaigns with X-rays have been accomplished during 2017 at Padova INFN and CERN EP/ESE facilities under different uniformity and temperature conditions up to 630 Mrad Total Ionizing Dose (TID). These studies corfirmed negligible degradation of analog front-ends performance after irradiation. First sample chips have been also bump-bonded to 50 μm × 50 μm and single readout electrode 25 μm × 100 μm 3D sensors provided by Trento FBK. This represented a major milestone for the entire CHIPIX65 project, offering to the pixel community the first example of a complete readout chip in 65 nm CMOS technology coupled to such a kind of silicon detectors. Extensive characterizations with laser and radioactive sources have started. This paper briefly summarizes most important pre- and post-irradiation results, along with preliminary results obtained from chips bump-bonded to 3D sensors. الوصف: This paper is a review of recent progress of RD53 Collaboration. Results obtained on the study of the radiation effects on 65 nm CMOS have matured enough to define first strategies to adopt in the design of analog and digital circuits. Critical building blocks and analog very front end chains have been designed, tested before and after 5-800 Mrad. Small prototypes of 64×64 pixels with complex digital architectures have been produced, and point to address the main issues of dealing with extremely high pixel rates, while operating at very small in-time thresholds in the analog front end. The collaboration is now proceeding at full speed towards the design of a large scale prototype, called RD53A, in 65 nm CMOS technology.
