الوصف: IN an investigation of the neutral fraction of cigarette smoke tar for the presence of carcinogenic hydrocarbons1, the fluorescence spectra given by various chromatographic fractions were obtained. One of these (spectrum h) has been found to be identical with the spectrum given by a sample of pure 1,2,3,4-dibenzopyrene, which has since become available for reference.

الوصف: IN attempts to determine a unifying principle of action for the many and varied carcinogenic agents, many workers have assigned an intermediary role to free radicals. The action of ionizing radiation and radiomimetic agents in this respect has been discussed by Brues and Barron1. It is stated that many, if not all, carcinogens are compounds capable of forming free radicals which may be stabilized as ions2. Oppenheimer et al. 3 discussed their possible role in the production of tumours in rodents by implanted films of various high polymers, and suggested, as a requirement for tumour production, the presence of foreign free radicals in a specific area for an extended period.

الوصف: RECENTLY, Cooper and Lindsey1 and Seelkopf2 described the identification and assay of the carcinogen 3,4-benzpyrene and other poly cyclic hydrocarbons in a neutral aromatic fraction of cigarette smoke. These investigators, in the attempt to reconstruct conditions complying with those present in normal human cigarette smoking, smoked cigarettes in an automatic fashion which effected strictly regular intermittent puffing.

الوصف: Music for Sleeping and Waking Minds (2011–2012) is a new, overnight work in which four performers fall asleep while wearing custom designed EEG sensors which monitor their brainwave activity. The data gathered from the EEG sensors is applied in real time to different audio and image signal processing functions, resulting in continuously evolving multi-channel sound environment and visual projection. This material serves as an audiovisual description of the individual and collective neurophysiological state of the ensemble. Audiences are invited to experience the work in different states of attention: while alert and asleep, resting and awakening.

مستخلص: We combined experimental cognitive and behavior genetic methods to investigate storage and executive components of working memory in 663 middle-aged male twins. A single latent factor model indicated that digits forward (storage) and two-digit transformation (executive + storage) scores were influenced by the same genes. Additional executive demands in digit transformation appeared to increase the variance of individual genetic differences from 25% for digits forward to 48% and 53% for the digit transformation scores. Although it was not the best model, a two-factor model also provided a good fit to the data. This model suggested the possibility of a second set of genes specifically influencing the executive component. We discuss the findings in the context of research suggesting that new genetic influences come into play if demand continues to increase beyond a certain threshold, a threshold that may change with task difficulty and with age. مستخلص: Ten years after the 1991 Persian Gulf War (GW I), a comprehensive evaluation of a national cohort of deployed veterans (DV) demonstrated a higher prevalence of several medical conditions, in comparison to a similarly identified cohort of nondeployed veterans (NDV). The present study determined the prevalence of medical conditions among nonveteran spouses of these GW I DV and NDV. A cohort of 490 spouses of GW I DV and 537 spouses of GW I NDV underwent comprehensive face-to-face examinations. No significant differences in health were detected except that spouses of DV were less likely to have one or more of a group of six common skin conditions. We conclude that, 10 years after GW I, the general physical health of spouses of GW I DV is similar to that of spouses of NDV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: Objective: This study reports the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among a nationally distributed sample of Vietnam Era veterans assessed using standardized psychiatric interviewing methods. Methods: In 1992, the National Institute of Mental Health Diagnostic Interview Schedule was administered by telephone to 8,169 middle-aged males who served in the military during the Vietnam era (1965-1975).Results: Approximately 72% of respondents reported a lifetime history and 36% reported a 12-month history of at least one psychiatric disorder. The most prevalent psychiatric disorders included alcohol abuse and/or dependence (54% lifetime, 17% 12 month), nicotine dependence (48% lifetime, 22% 12 month), and posttraumatic stress disorder (10% lifetime, 4.5% 12 month). Conclusions: Because of possible participation bias, these results likely represent conservative estimates of psychiatric disorder prevalences among the more than eight million Vietnam Era veterans and reinforces the major public health challenge of preventing, identifying, and treating psychiatric illness in American veterans.
