مستخلص: This article describes process and outcome evaluations of a blended Cyber ESL program for native Spanish speakers in Chicago who could not use regular ESL classes. The outcomes measured against before and after scores and several comparison groups showed large gains in English language proficiency. 58% percent of students from the cohorts which took the appropriately normed English tests advanced at least one grade level and 31% advanced two grade levels in a sixteen-week course. Focus groups with students revealed large satisfaction with the course. The students had a wide-age range of characteristics but the majority were women and from lower-income households. The results showed an advantage for combined online and in-person tutorial approach over just class-room or just online approaches especially for certain students. Forty-one million U.S. residents are native Spanish speakers. An innovative approach to improving their English is a major contribution to their integration into the economic mainstream. الوصف: Land Use Regression (LUR) models of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) normally focus on land use (e.g., industrial area) or transportation facilities (e.g., roadway); here, we incorporate area sources (e.g., gas stations) from city permitting data and Google Point of Interest (POI) data to compare model performance. We used measurements from 50 community-based sampling locations (2013-2015) in Minneapolis, MN, USA to develop LUR models for 60 VOCs. We used three sets of independent variables: (1) base-case models with land use and transportation variables, (2) models that add area source variables from local business permit data, and (3) models that use Google POI data for area sources. The models with Google POI data performed best; for example, the total VOC (TVOC) model has better goodness-of-fit (adj-R-2: 0.56; Root Mean Square Error [RMSE]: 032 mu g/m(3)) as compared to the permit data model (0.42; 037) and the base-case model (0.26; 0.41). Area source variables were selected in over two thirds of models among the 60 VOCs at small-scale buffer sizes (e.g., 25 m-500 m). Our work suggests that VOC LUR models can be developed using community-based sampling and that models improve by including area sources as measured by business permit and Google POI data. الوصف: In this dissertation, we discuss properties of the Stern sequence, denoted by s(n), and define a related sequence. First, we give a brief historical background and known results. We then discuss the second and third largest values for the Stern sequence, as well as the asymptotics when a value m will first appear in a row in the diatomic array. We also investigate the distribution of values for the Stern sequence, as well as the gaps of the ordered values from a row. After this, we investigate the properties of the related sequence called w(n):=s(3n)/2. We give recurrences for the sequence and find generalized recurrences and a reduction formula. We attempt to find a combinatorial interpretation for w(n), as well as a generating function for the sequence. We also find the largest value of w(n) for a row of its triangular array. We consider sums of w(n) and the average order of magnitude, which is the same average order of the Stern sequence. We also examine the greatest common divisor of consecutive terms, as well as the sequence w(n) modulo 2. Finally, we define a polynomial analogue and investigate some of its properties.
