    الوصف: Visual arguments, often used in advertising or social causes, rely on images to persuade viewers to do or believe something. Understanding these arguments requires selective vision: only specific visual stimuli within an image are relevant to the argument, and relevance can only be understood within the context of a broader argumentative structure. While visual arguments are readily appreciated by human audiences, we ask: are today's AI capable of similar understanding? We collect and release VisArgs, an annotated corpus designed to make explicit the (usually implicit) structures underlying visual arguments. VisArgs includes 1,611 images accompanied by three types of textual annotations: 5,112 visual premises (with region annotations), 5,574 commonsense premises, and reasoning trees connecting them to a broader argument. We propose three tasks over VisArgs to probe machine capacity for visual argument understanding: localization of premises, identification of premises, and deduction of conclusions. Experiments demonstrate that 1) machines cannot fully identify the relevant visual cues. The top-performing model, GPT-4-O, achieved an accuracy of only 78.5%, whereas humans reached 98.0%. All models showed a performance drop, with an average decrease in accuracy of 19.5%, when the comparison set was changed from objects outside the image to irrelevant objects within the image. Furthermore, 2) this limitation is the greatest factor impacting their performance in understanding visual arguments. Most models improved the most when given relevant visual premises as additional inputs, compared to other inputs, for deducing the conclusion of the visual argument.

    الوصف: Early-life stress experiences can produce lasting impacts on organismal adaptation and fitness. How transient stress elicits memory-like physiological effects is largely unknown. Here, we show that early-life thermal stress strongly up-regulates tsp-1, a gene encoding the conserved transmembrane tetraspanin in C. elegans. TSP-1 forms prominent multimers and stable web-like structures critical for membrane barrier functions in adults and during aging. Increased TSP-1 abundance persists even after transient early-life heat stress. Such regulation requires CBP-1, a histone acetyltransferase that facilitates initial tsp-1 transcription. Tetraspanin webs form regular membrane structures and mediate resilience-promoting effects of early-life thermal stress. Gain-of-function TSP-1 confers marked C. elegans longevity extension and thermal resilience in human cells. Together, our results reveal a cellular mechanism by which early-life thermal stress produces long-lasting memory-like impact on organismal resilience and longevity.

    مستخلص: This study illustrates the successful achievement of tunable defect bands in one-dimensional defective phononic crystals (PnCs) through the incorporation of piezoelectric defects with synthetic negative capacitances (SNCs) for the first time. The efficacy of SNCs in creating tunable bandpass filters across a broad frequency range is thoroughly examined using the proposed analytical and numerical models. A newly developed electroelastically coupled transfer matrix that incorporates SNCs is presented, considering either series or parallel connection between bimorph piezoelectric elements. Defect band and transmittance analyses are conducted using the transfer matrix and S-parameter methods. Two key findings emerge from this investigation. First, when the total equivalent capacitance of the bimorph piezoelectric elements and SNC becomes zero, the defect band representing the point-symmetric defect-mode shape can be customized throughout the entire phononic bandgap. Second, the constant transmittance value, resembling short-circuit conditions, highlights the remarkable ability of SNCs to tune defect bands without energy dissipation, paving the way for fully tunable bandpass filters. To propel this research forward, future investigations could explore expanding the design space with double defects, adopting enhanced modeling techniques to account for lateral and shear effects, developing a control algorithm for the automatic optimization of SNC values in actively tunable bandpass filters, and incorporating artificial intelligence into design methods for piezoelectric defects with electrical connections. However, in this space, population density management is important in terms of infectious disease management and urban revitalization at the same time as areas where a large population is active. By comparing actual urban user data (POI), urban structural spatial characteristics, and floating population data, we intend to derive the characteristics of urban space in which actual users are active. The above study is of important significance in urban risk management by studying the relationship between the morphological structure of urban streets and the urban center. POI-intensive areas were selected for the entire Seoul Metropolitan Government to compare the urban structural differences between naturally occurring cities and planned centers through POI. Among the POI concentrated areas, Eulji-ro was the naturally occurring city, and Seolleung was selected as the planning center. POI data was visualized through GIS based on 2022 data, using a public data portal provided by the government. This study is basically based on multiple regression analysis. By setting the indicators of spatial syntax as major independent variables and POI-related variables as dependent variables, we would like to find out the impact of the physical structure of the city on people's behavior patterns. As a result, many POIs were located in areas with high integration and connection, and the back street was found to be a POI-intensive area. The degree of integration of the naturally occurring area (Eulji-ro) was correlated with integration only in 800M units, and for the central street with high integration and connection, the back street with low integration and high connection compared to the central street was POI dense.     مستخلص: Based on conservation of resources theory, the present study examines a serial mediation model in which empowering leadership predicts the nature of work-home interfaces via cognitive states and processes (interactional justice and work rumination). Two waves of data with a one-month interval were obtained from 195 full-time Korean employees. Structural equation modeling assessed mediation, first by two forms of interactional justice (interpersonal and informational) and then by two forms of work rumination (positive and negative). The results generally supported the mediation model showing that empowering leaders helped subordinates' work-home enrichment, because they enhanced both interpersonal and informational justice, resulting in positive rumination about their work experiences. Empowering leaders also helped reduce subordinates' work-home conflict through enhancing informational justice, which made employees ruminate less about negative aspects of work during off-job time. Testing alternative models that added more direct paths did not improve model fit. Overall, the study contributed to understanding the underlying cognitive mechanisms explaining the effect of empowering leadership on work-home spillover. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

    الوصف: Meaningful work is a fundamental motivator of employee behavior. Our research approaches meaningful work as an ethical phenomenon and examines a serial mediation model that delineates the ethical antecedents and outcomes of meaningful work. We propose that an ethical (independence and caring) climate fit can foster work meaningfulness. Meaningful work can instill a sense of obligation (duty orientation) and ownership (moral ownership) toward the organization, which, in turn, promotes ethical behavior (ethical voice) and limits unethical behavior (unethical pro-organizational behavior and time theft). Across two studies based on four-wave data collected from Indian managerial employees (Study 1: N = 231; Study 2: N = 190), we found support for our prediction. This research enhances our understanding of ethical value congruence as an important precursor of meaningful work and affirms the motivational power of meaningful work in fostering employees’ ethical and limiting unethical behaviors via the mechanisms of duty and ownership.

    الوصف: Purpose: This study aims to explore how the three types of human resource (HR) practices, encapsulated in the ability, motivation and opportunity (AMO) model, foster a learning organizational culture (LOC). In doing so, the authors evaluate the centrality of knowledge sharing (KS) in mediating this relationship. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative survey is undertaken to collect data from managers working in organizations operating in the UK. The authors use several statistical techniques to assess the psychometric properties of the measures and test the hypotheses using multiple regression executed with Preacher and Hayes’ Process macro. Findings: The findings show that the AMO HR practices significantly facilitate the development of a LOC in the workplace, and KS among organizational members amplifies the effects of these HR practices in the process. Originality/value: A LOC functions as an important source of organizational performance and effectiveness. It enhances the absorptive capacity of the organization to capture, share and transfer knowledge to optimize work. Hence, developing a culture that nurtures organizational learning could be a priority for managing HR. This study, therefore, extends the understanding of the role of AMO HR practices in fostering a learning culture – thus, providing managers with the essential knowledge to improve performance. The study also enriches the literature on HR practices, KS and LOC by integrating these three variables into a unifying framework.
