الوصف: Introduction. Maintaining mobility and extending the period of functional activity in everyday life is the basis for gerontological prevention for the elderly. An important task in the physical culture strategy for an aging society is to prepare both oneself and one’s family for old age (education "in old age" and "towards old age"). Educational institutions for activation of seniors play a very important role in this area. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between physical activity and quality of life of women 65+, including participation in senior education. Material and methods. The study was conducted among inhabitants of Tarnów province (southern Poland) aged 65+: 205 educationally active seniors (group I) and 207 women who do not benefit from senior education (group II). The diagnostic survey method and standardized interview technique using the WHOQoL-AGE quality of life questionnaire were used. The level of significance was adopted as p≤0.05. Results and conclusions.Educationally active seniors significantly more often declared systematic physical activity. Regular physical activity was most often undertaken by women in the youngest age group. It is recommended to carry out activities promoting participation in various forms of physical activity, especially in the two oldest age groups (old & oldest old). It is also proposed to continue research on the quality of life and its determinants by gender, and the results of these studies can be used by managers and decision-makers in the local health care sector to develop health-promoting strategies targeted at specific groups.

الوصف: The first cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection were identified at the end of 2019 and, in the next few months, coronavirus disease (COVID-19) spread throughout the world. Initially, it was believed that this disease mainly affected elderly individuals with comorbidities, in whom respiratory failure often occurs. It was believed that children fell ill from the infection more often, although the course of infection in the vast majority of pediatric cases has been asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic. In April and May 2020, the first report of a rapidly progressing disease, similar to Kawasaki syndrome, was found in children who had been infected with SARS-CoV-2. Shortly thereafter, children with symptoms of pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome (PIMS-ST [temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection]) began presenting to pediatric hospitals around the world. The syndrome has a mortality rate of up to 2%. Symptoms of PIMS-TS include those that may suggest the need for surgical treatment (severe abdominal pain with the presence of peritoneal symptoms, ascites, high levels of inflammatory markers, intestinal inflammation, and appendages revealed on ultrasound examination). However, there are few reports addressing surgical cases associated with this condition. The authors present a case involving an 11-year-old boy who was admitted to hospital with severe abdominal pain and underwent surgery for symptoms of peritonitis and was diagnosed with PIMS in the post-operative period. Due to the large number of illnesses caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection in recent months, the diagnosis of PIMS-TS/MISC should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute abdominal symptoms, especially in atypical courses and interviews indicating exposure to SARS-CoV-2.

مستخلص: Introduction: Urolithiasis is an increasingly common condition. Each patient after stone passage should have stone analysis performed. Every child with a urinary stone should be given a complete metabolic evaluation, and the stone analysis is an essential component of it. The aim of the study was to establish the relation between the metabolic profile of urolithiasis in children with idiopathic hypercalciuria and the composition of the excreted stone. Material and methods: The study included 26 children with urolithiasis (aged 1-17 years) from whom stones were obtained for the analysis. The urine pH and the 24-hour urine excretion of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and oxalate as well as spot urinalysis including ratio of crystalloids to creatinine from the second voided urine sample of the day were assessed. Urinary stones were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy. The relation between the metabolic data and the stone type was then analyzed, taking into account two types of minerals: stones with a predominance of calcium oxalate dihydrate (weddellite) and calcium oxalate monohydrate (whewellite). Results: No correlation was found between the individual serum metabolic parameters of the patient and the composition of excreted stones. Substantially lower urinary excretion of phosphates, oxalate, magnesium and lower urinary pH were found in the group with predominant weddellite stones. A reduced value of each of these 4 variables increased more than sixfold the chance of diagnosing urolithiasis with stone composed of over 60% weddellite. Conclusions: The urinary metabolic profile is associated with the composition of renal stones estimated in infrared spectroscopy in children with idiopathic hypercalciuria. The coexistence of several urinary excretion anomalies improves the prediction of the composition of the stones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
