الوصف: Abstract Thermal or thermo-mechanical loading is one of the major causes of wheel surface damage in Australian heavy haul operations. In addition, multi-wear wheels appear to be particularly sensitive to thermo-mechanical damage during their first service life. Such damage can incur heavy machining penalties or even premature scrapping of wheels. The combination of high contact stresses as well as substantial thermal loading (such as during prolonged periods of tread braking) can lead to severe plastic deformation, thermal fatigue and microstructural deterioration. For some high-strength wheel grades, the increased sensitivity to thermo-mechanical damage observed during the first service period may be attributed to the presence of a near-surface region in which the microstructure is more sensitive to these loading conditions than the underlying material. The standards applicable to wheels used in Australian heavy haul operations are based on the Association of American Railroads (AAR) specification M-107/M-208, which does not include any requirements for microstructure. The implementation of acceptance criteria for the microstructure, in particular that in the near-surface region of the wheel, may be necessary when new wheels are purchased. The stability of wheel microstructures during thermo-mechanical loading and the effects of alloying elements commonly used in wheel manufacturing are reviewed. A brief guide to improving thermal/mechanical stability of the microstructure is also provided.

الوصف: SUMMARYPartial agonists of dopamine receptors are used in combination with full antagonists in treating psychosis, either to mitigate side-effects or in the hope of increasing effectiveness. We examine how combinations may affect the occupancy of D2/D3dopamine receptors and explore how these can explain the outcomes in the light of the dopamine hypothesis of psychosis. The combinations considered here are from published studies combining aripiprazole with amisulpride, with risperidone in people with hyperprolactinaemia and with olanzapine to mitigate weight gain. We discuss possible worsening of symptoms by the addition of a partial agonist or switching. We also examine the potentially adverse interaction with a full antagonist such as haloperidol given during a subsequent relapse to control severe agitation.

الوصف: SUMMARYPartial agonists such as aripiprazole are often used in addition to a full antagonist such as amisulpride, risperidone or olanzapine in an attempt to mitigate side-effects such as sedation, hyperprolactinaemia and weight gain. However, there can be unintended consequences, including worsening of psychosis. Moreover, previous exposure to a partial agonist may impair the subsequent response to a potent antipsychotic such as haloperidol used to control symptoms of relapse. To understand the mechanisms involved, a method is needed to compare potency in the pharmacological effects of different drugs used in combinations. This article is intended to explore and explain the theoretical principles based on the dopamine hypothesis of schizophrenia. We apply the method to analyse a recently described trial in which two full antagonists (olanzapine and amisulpride) are compared individually and in combination.

الوصف: Experimental testing of flash-butt welded premium rail steel samples was undertaken to quantify the variation in strength through the cross-section of the weld, with results showing a general correlation between the width of the heat-affected-zone and the ultimate tensile strength. Microstructural examination and fractography revealed the presence of defects in some samples. Large defects can be identified by non-destructive testing methods as part of routine structural integrity assessment; however, small defects may escape detection but could propagate under cyclic loading in service leading to catastrophic failures. This work demonstrates the requirement for stringent control of heat input to prevent the development of defects in premium rail steels with high alloying content.
