الوصف: Background: SARS-CoV-2 virus changed society’s behaviour. Population was advised to reduce unnecessary heath care use to accommodate urgent cases and daily increase of COVID-19 patients. Health care facilities faced huge challenges, having to readjust their response to preserve good quality of care. In Portugal, a significant reduction in the number of admissions to the Emergency Department (ED) was reported all over the country, however the impact on the dynamics of undeferrable surgery remains to be reported. This study compares the volume and characteristics of urgent/emergency surgery during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic with the homologous period in 2019, chronologically illustrating the national evolution of new COVID-19 cases and the social and hospital containment response. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted in a tertiary hospital center located in the most affected region by COVID-19 in Portugal. Medical records of patients who underwent urgent/emergency surgery between March 1st and May 2nd of both 2020 and 2019 were examined and the volume of surgeries were compared. Also, daily national updates from Portuguese Directorate-General for Health were analysed. Results: During the COVID-19 pandemic approximately 30% less patients underwent urgent/emergency surgery (99%CI = 0.18–0.61, p< 0.001). Waiting time for surgery showed no difference between both years (p= 0.068), but patients who did surgery during the 2020 pandemic had higher mortality rates than the ones who did it in 2019 (11.4% in 2020 and 5.9% in 2019, p= 0.001). Reduction in surgery volume was correlated with the increasing number of infected cases nationally. Conclusion: This study demonstrates decreasing numbers of urgent/emergency procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic that may be justified by the national growth number of infected cases. Preoperative mass screening strategy was implemented without compromising the efficiency of surgical service, but patients’ mortality was higher. The importance of visiting the ED during COVID-19 pandemic for serious cases that cannot be managed in other settings should be highlighted.

الوصف: Let $S$ be a (compact)\ Riemann surface of genus greater than one. Two automorphism of $S$ are topologically equivalent if they are conjugated by a homeomorphism. The topological classification of automorphisms is a classical problem and its study was initiated by J. Nielsen who in the thirties classified conformal ones. The case of anticonformal automorphisms is more involved and was solved by K. Yocoyama in the 80s-90s. In order to decide whether two anti-conformal automorphisms are equivalent, it is usually necessary to take into account many invariants, some of which are difficult to compute. In this work we present some situations where the topological equivalence is mainly due to the genus of some quotient surfaces and the algebraic structure of the automorphism group. An anticonformal square root of a conformal automorphism $f$ is an anticonformal automorphism $g$ such that $g^{2}=f$ . Let $g_{1}$ and $g_{2}$ be anticonformal square roots of the same conformal automorphism of order $m$, where $m$ is an even integer. If genus of $S/\left\langle g_{1},g_{2} \right\rangle $ is even and genus of $S/\left\langle g_{i}\right\rangle $ is $\neq2$ we prove that $\left\langle g_{1}\right\rangle $ and $\left\langle g_{2}\right\rangle $ are topologically equivalent. If genus of $S/\left\langle g_{1},g_{2}\right\rangle $ is odd and $\left\langle g_{1},g_{2}\right\rangle $ is abelian we obtain that $\left\langle g_{1}\right\rangle $ and $\left\langle g_{2}\right\rangle $ are topologically equivalent. We give examples to justify the condition genus of $S/\left\langle g_{i}\right\rangle $ $\neq2$ and $\left\langle g_{1},g_{2}\right\rangle $ abelian in each case.

الوصف: Animals chain movements into long-lived motor strategies, exhibiting variability across scales that reflects the interplay between internal states and environmental cues. To reveal structure in such variability, we build Markov models of movement sequences that bridges across time scales and enables a quantitative comparison of behavioral phenotypes among individuals. Applied to larval zebrafish responding to diverse sensory cues, we uncover a hierarchy of long-lived motor strategies, dominated by changes in orientation distinguishing cruising versus wandering strategies. Environmental cues induce preferences along these modes at the population level: while fish cruise in the light, they wander in response to aversive stimuli, or in search for appetitive prey. As our method encodes the behavioral dynamics of each individual fish in the transitions among coarse-grained motor strategies, we use it to uncover a hierarchical structure in the phenotypic variability that reflects exploration-exploitation trade-offs. Across a wide range of sensory cues, a major source of variation among fish is driven by prior and/or immediate exposure to prey that induces exploitation phenotypes. A large degree of variability that is not explained by environmental cues unravels motivational states that override the sensory context to induce contrasting exploration-exploitation phenotypes. Altogether, by extracting the timescales of motor strategies deployed during navigation, our approach exposes structure among individuals and reveals internal states tuned by prior experience.

الوصف: CrI3 is a layered ferromagnetic insulator that has recently attracted enormous interest as it was the first example of a stand-alone monolayer ferromagnet, paving the way towards the study of two-dimensional magnetic materials and their use as building blocks of hybrid van der Waals layered heterostructures. Here we go one step down in the dimensionality ladder and report the synthesis and characterization of a tubular one-dimensional van der Waals heterostructure where CrI3 nanotubes are encapsulated within multiwall carbon nanotubes, integrating a magnetic insulator and a conductor. By means of the capillary filling of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), we obtained single-wall CrI3 nanotubes with diameters ranging between 2 nm and 10 nm, with an average of 5.3 nm. Using aberration corrected electron microscopy in combination with spectroscopic techniques we confirm the structure and chemical composition of the nanotubes. SQUID measurements, combined with element-specific X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) indicate unequivocally that the Cr atoms in encapsulated CrI3 nanotubes are magnetic with a collective state compatible with a radial magnetization state predicted both by first-principles calculations and a model Hamiltonian. Our results represent a step forward in establishing 1D van der Waals heterostructures as a playground for the exploration of non-collinear magnetic states arising from the interplay between magnetic anisotropy and curvature in tubular geometries.

الوصف: Objective: To analyze the results of the use of narratives in group therapy for the qualification process of professionals in the Psychosocial Care Centers on the use of group dynamics. Method: This is an action research involving 21 workers from 11 Psychosocial Care Centers in the Brazilian Central-West region. For data collection, narratives written by the participants about their work practices with therapeutic groups and theoretical discussion based on in-person workshops were used. Data were subjected to narrative analysis with the support of qualitative analysis software. Results: The category “Concerns and Questioning” showed the workers’ lack of knowledge regarding the concept of group and group dynamics, the group management challenges, and the discomfort with the frustrations experienced by the group. The category “Learning for Group Coordination” showed knowledge acquisition for group planning and functioning, and understanding of the role of the group coordinator for mental health care. Conclusion: Narrating the scenes of group care allowed participants to exercise critical reflexive thinking, recognize the theory of group dynamics, and develop skills to coordinate groups.

الوصف: Objective: to explore the deaf people’s perceptions about their well-being, published on a weblog. Method: A free access spanish blog that’s been created and used by deaf people is selected. Under qualitative methodology with a phenomenological approach, through the non-participating and asynchronous observation, sign language speeches are analyzed in 44 video messages uploaded by deaf bloggers. Results: in the speeches analyzed, inclusion’s areas cited the most are self-determination, social inclusion and emotional well-being, these latter two in a negative way: social exclusion and emotional distress. Final considerations: The study participants state that the arrangements adopted for their inclusion are not enough, with feelings of discomfort prevailing in all areas and life stages. Solidarity initiatives, elimination of communication barriers and true transforming agents of our society are needed.

الوصف: Animal locomotion is often subject to constraints arising from anatomical/physiological asymmetries. We use the nematode C.~elegans as a minimal model system to ask whether such constraints might shape locomotion patterns optimized during evolution. We focus on turning behaviours in two contrasting environmental contexts: (i) random exploration in the absence of strong stimuli and (ii) acute avoidance (escape) navigation upon encountering a strong aversive stimulus. We characterise the full repertoire of reorientation behaviours, including gradual reorientations and various posturally distinct sharp turns. During exploration, our measurements and theoretical modelling indicate that orientation fluctuations on short timescales are, on average, optimized to compensate the constraining gradual turn bias on long timescales. During escape, our data suggests that the reorientation is controlled not by an analog logic of continuous turn-amplitude modulations, but rather through the digital logic of selecting discrete turn types, leading to a symmetric escape performance despite strongly asymmetric turning biases.
