    الوصف: One of the most pressing emergent educational issues addressed by the international research literature concerns the effects that excessive or problematic smartphone use can have on students’ academic performance. An exploratory study was thus carried out with 46 students enrolled in a five-year degree program at the University of Padova (Italy) who were asked to provide their perceptions of their level of smartphone dependence and academic performance. Findings seem to indicate a significant correlation between high levels of smartphone addiction, difficulty concentrating while studying, and a frequent tendency to procrastinate on completing assigned tasks. Responses regarding smartphone distraction during in-person classes were particularly interesting: over 75% of respondents reported using their smartphones frequently in class. In order of importance, their reasons for doing so were to view and answer social media messages (61%), “boredom” due to the teaching strategies employed by some teachers in presenting lessons (41%), and the need to take a break from concentrating in class (35%). Lastly, smartphone use and its effects on academic performance involve three principal components: usage time, distraction in class, and frequency of smartphone checks. Smartphone usage time seems to have a direct negative effect on exam grades. Distraction in class is most significant for respondents who use their smartphones for messaging, while the frequency with which respondents check their smartphones is inversely proportional to their age...

    الوصف: The paper presents the findings of a study of the application of a teaching model (Digital Storytelling for Competencies—DSCM) which used Digital Storytelling to encourage students enrolled in a second-cycle degree program in Social Work to reflect on their future professional competencies. Students analyzed and discussed particularly significant stories (critical incidents) drawn from real-life work situations, which they then made into short digital story videos, casting themselves as actors in a role-play process. Students’ perceptions were analyzed to determine the model’s effectiveness, particularly as regards the extent to which the process of creating the digital story was able to stimulate reflection on the most important competencies required in the students’ future working careers. The findings were highly encouraging, and the model will be tested with students and professionals together in the field.

    الوصف: L’articolo presenta una ricerca condotta presso una Unità Sanitaria Locale all’interno di un corso di aggiornamento professionale per Infermieri di Day Surgery Multidisciplinare, basato sul metodo del Digital Storytelling. Attraverso dei focus group i partecipanti hanno raccontato storie tratte dalle loro reali esperienze professionali dove si sono trovati ad affrontare un problema particolarmente critico e, dopo averne discusso evidenziando le competenze richieste per risolverlo, le hanno trasformate in narrazioni digitali. La realizzazione dei Digital Storytelling attraverso un role-playing in contesti reali di lavoro ha fatto emergere le dimensioni emozionale, partecipativa e collaborativa. La messa a punto della sceneggiatura e dello storyboard con l’utilizzo di foto e video ha permesso di focalizzare i contesti specifici dei problemi raccontati favorendo l’esplicitazione di molta conoscenza tacita. I video sono poi divenuti disponibili per essere diffusi online come supporti formativi per l’aggiornamento professionale tra pari o per i nuovi assunti anche in altre Unità Sanitarie Locali del territorio.

    الوصف: The recent media interest in the topic of fake news shows that particular attention must be given to fact-checking process: each student must be educated in these skills that will be useful during his / her school curriculum and subsequently also in work and life contexts. These skills are not only technological but also “critical thinking” skills and they are made explicit above all as Information Literacy skills, that is, as the set of technical and methodological skills that enable students to know where and how to search for information online, to filter it effectively and above all, to evaluate them adequately (Head & Eisenberg, 2010). The article presents the results of an exploratory survey about their perceptions of fake news on 184 students of the third and fourth year of secondary school (16-18 years). In particular, the perceptions and the approach to the phenomenon of fake news by the girls of the boys are compared which, although presenting many similarities, differ in some fundamental aspects, such as the perception of their technological skills and the importance given to different characteristics of the source as well as their views on which institutions should deal with the problem.

    الوصف: The paper presents the results of the “Learning with Wikipedia” project which involved 1200 students and 30 faculty members at the University of Padova in creating and expanding encyclopedia articles on various subject-specific topics. Teaching activities were developed which considered Wikipedia not so much as a container for Open Educational Resources, but as a true learning environment, well organized with precise rules that can stimulate instructors to adopt Open Educational Practices. Students attended workshops where they were introduced to the project’s aims, the competences expected of them, and the procedures for contributing to the encyclopedia. One of the most significant points that emerged during the project was the importance of stimulating the full set of digital competences (for example finding and evaluating information). Gaining these competences is essential for the activities’ success and for participating, now and in the future in an extended community based on OER. That's why we investigated students’ and instructors’ perceptions regarding a set of digital competences gained by working with Wikipedia. The project was also able to make students and instructors understand that writing encyclopedia articles is not a mere academic exercise, but is a Service Learning activity that benefits the entire community, and that Wikipedia should be considered as a participatory social process and not just as a means of learning subject-specific content.

    الوصف: In this paper we describe an innovative approach to the design process of Smart City interventions. We tested it with participants enrolled in the Master’s Degree program in “Innovators in enterprise and public administration”: the objective of the Master was to stimulate the acquisition of technical and methodological skills useful in designing and implementing specific Smart City actions. During the "project work" phase, participants learned about a design method named SAM – Smart City Model - based on the Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT). We present an overview of design criteria for Smart City projects, the description of the theoretical framework of Activity Theory, and our proposal of the SAM design model. We also present some examples of student’s “projects” and a more extensive description of one case study about the full design process of an App planned using SAM, for “smart health” vaccine management and monitoring services. The App was later published and made available to the citizens and was successful in attracting thousands of users. All the participants considered the model very useful in particular because it made possible to understand the interaction and solve contradictions between different stakeholders and systems involved.

    الوصف: La ricerca presenta una sperimentazione sul campo in collaborazione con l’Istituto Provinciale per la Ricerca e la Sperimentazione Educativa of Trento (IPRASE) e ha sviluppato un nuovo modello (SoSoFIN – Social Software in formal, informal and non-formal context) per verificare se e come i processi di apprendimento degli studenti che si sviluppano nei contesti informali e non formali possono essere con efficacia integrati nel curriculum scolastico formale. Gli insegnanti e gli studenti sono stati accompagnati a sviluppare le loro competenze digitali attraverso l’uso degli strumenti del web 2.0 durante lo svolgimento di specifici progetti disciplinari. La ricerca ha sperimentato un ampio ventaglio di progetti in cui studenti e insegnanti hanno collaborato con le comunità locali creando artefatti digitali fortemente contestualizzati nel territorio e rendendoli disponibili a tutti. Questo approccio didattico, stimolando processi socio-culturali attraverso le tecnologie, ha migliorato la partecipazione e motivazione ad apprendere, così come le competenze digitali di insegnanti e studenti, che sono state messe alla prova sul campo.

    الوصف: Digital skills especially those related to Information Literacy, are today considered fundamental to the education of students, both at school and at university. Searching and evaluating information found on the Internet is surely an important competency. An effective way to develop this competency is to educate students about the development of critical thinking. The article presents a qualitative-quantitative survey conducted during a course in Educational Technologies within a five year Degree program. The outcomes of the survey reveal some interesting behaviors and perceptions of students when they are faced with the Web search process and the characteristics of their critical thinking processes: some aspects of critical thinking are generally well-supported, but others are acquired only after specific training. Experience shows that if properly motivated by metacognitive reflections and a clear method, students can actually critically evaluate the information presented online, the sources, and the sustainability of the arguments found. positive results also occurred when the evaluation process was done in a collaborative modality.

    الوصف: Il progetto ha coinvolto un centinaio di studenti di scuole superiori del Veneto impegnati nell’editazione di Wikipedia su voci relative ai Beni Culturali della Regione. L’attività ha stimolato l’acquisizione di competenze di carattere disciplinare e trasversale (competenze digitali in senso stretto, relazionali, etiche) sensibilizzando gli studenti alla partecipazione e al lavoro collaborativo finalizzato a produrre artefatti digitali percepiti come utili alla comunità. I risultati dimostrano, dal punto di vista degli studenti, una crescita dell’autostima, della motivazione ad apprendere, ed una maggiore consapevolezza del processi di apprendimento; per gli insegnanti si registra una notevole fiducia in Wikipedia che cresce dopo l’esperienza fatta e contribuisce a considerarla strumento efficace nella didattica, motivante e di empowerment personale e sociale.
