الوصف: Purpose: To test the hypothesis that combined resistance and endurance training would improve muscle strength, fatigue, depression, and quality of life in persons with MS. Methods: Twenty-seven women with MS were randomly assigned to either control (CON, n = 13) or the experimental (EXP, n = 14) group. The participants in the EXP group trained twice a week for 12 weeks, followed by 12 weeks of detraining. Both CON and EXP groups were tested before and after 12 weeks of the intervention period, as well as 12 weeks after training cessation (follow-up), where measures of muscle strength, fatigue, depression, and quality of life were evaluated. Results: There were significant changes in maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), 1 RM leg extension, and 1RM chest press following the intervention period in the EXP group ( P < 0.05), but not in the CON group ( P > 0.05). These changes persisted after 12 weeks of detraining. Similar findings were found for fatigue, depression, and physical and mental composites of quality of life. Conclusion: These results suggest that combined exercise training, at a minimum, prevents the disease-related deterioration of muscular performance and quality of life and well-being in persons with MS.

الوصف: OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the impact of physical exercise on cognitive symptoms in depressed adult patients. METHODS: Systematic literature search was performed in Web of Science and CINAHL from inception to August 2016. Two reviewers independently selected randomized trials evaluating the effect of exercise on cognitive functions in patients with a validated diagnosis of depression. Outcome measures included global cognition and different cognitive domains (speed of processing, attention/vigilance, working memory, verbal and visual memory, and reasoning). RESULTS: Eight trials met inclusion criteria (637 patients). A fixed-effects model showed absence of beneficial effect on global cognition (Hedges' g = 0.07, 95% CI -0.08 to 0.24, I2 = 0%) as well as on specific cognitive domains. Sensitivity analyses did not show an impact of exercise in studies with shorter intervention duration compared to longer trials (between group heterogeneity Q = 3.564, df = 1, P = 0.059), single session per week compared to multiple sessions (Q = 2.691, df = 1, P = 0.101) and low exercise intensity compared with moderate/high intensity (Q = 2.952, df = 1, P = 0.086). CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis did not observe a substantial benefit of physical exercise on cognitive symptoms in depression.

الوصف: In light of theories postulating a role for music in forming emotional and social bonds, here we investigated whether endogenous rhythms synchronize between multiple individuals when listening to music. Cardiovascular and respiratory recordings were taken from multiple individuals (musically trained or music-naïve) simultaneously, at rest and during a live concert comprising music excerpts with varying degrees of complexity of the acoustic envelope. Inter-individual synchronization of cardiorespiratory rhythms showed a subtle but reliable increase during passively listening to music compared to baseline. The low-level auditory features of the music were largely responsible for creating or disrupting such synchronism, explaining ~80% of its variance, over and beyond subjective musical preferences and previous musical training. Listening to simple rhythms and melodies, which largely dominate the choice of music during rituals and mass events, brings individuals together in terms of their physiological rhythms, which could explain why music is widely used to favor social bonds.

الوصف: This study aimed to test acute reactivity during a physical activity in an outdoor setting and to verify the relative perceived performance. In all, 38 volunteers wore accelerometers or not and completed two 20-minute sessions of self-selected pace physical activity. Covered distance, exertional responses, and perceived efficacy were recorded at the end of every session. Relevant finding of this study has been that reactivity to accelerometers also occurs in acute condition. Consequently, this condition leads to a better performance and a greater perceived exertion. Moreover, this situation seems to occur in a state of awareness.

الوصف: Background: Anxiety is a common comorbidity in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Particularly, during adolescence and adulthood, people with ASD may experience a worsening in anxiety symptoms as a result of entering more complex social situations and of becoming more aware of their interpersonal difficulties. To date, pharmacological treatments (such as antidepressants) have showed preliminary efficacy, but data are still sparse and medications can be burdened by side effects. On the other hand, cognitive-behavioral therapy seems promising, but, presently, there are no empirically supported treatments for anxiety in ASD. It is well-known that physical activity is associated with a wide range of health benefits. In particular, aerobic exercise seems to exert an anxiolytic effect on healthy controls as well as on patients with generalized anxiety disorder or panic disorder. Objectives: the present randomized study aimed to evaluate the effect of physical activity on anxiety levels in a sample of adults with ASD Methods: Our study planned to recruit 20 participants who were randomly assigned to treatment or waiting list. Treatment consisted in one and a half hour per week of aerobic physical workout. Exercise sessions lasted for three months and subjects were required to attend at least 10 sessions. Heart rate and activity counts have been recorded during treatment sessions. Anxiety was evaluated using self-report questionnaires (i.e. Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale) as well as clinician-rated instruments (i.e. Hamilton Anxiety Scale). Additionally, cortisol diurnal variation was measured before and after treatment. Results: all patients in the treatment arm experienced improvement in symptoms and there was a significant decrease in self-report anxiety (p<0.05). Conclusions: physical activity may represent an alternative effective treatment for anxiety in this patient group.

الوصف: Background and aim The purpose of this study was to compare the amount of physical activity and sedentary time from the self-administered, long version of the IPAQ with an objective measure of them using an accelerometer in a high school student’s sample. The present study also examined whether the amount of physical activity and sedentary time is related to aerobic fitness or psychological responses to acute exercise. Methods Thirty adolescents from an Italian high school wore accelerometers for five days and completed the IPAQ questionnaire. Criterion-related validity was determined by Spearman correlations between IPAQ questionnaire scores and minutes of accelerometer-measured sedentary time, moderate and vigorous activities. Participants also completed a maximal graded exercise test to assess aerobic fitness, expressed as V_O2max, and psychological responses (i.e., perceived exertion and affective valence) to acute exercise. Results Spearman correlation coefficients between IPAQ questionnaire scores and minutes of accelerometer-measured sedentary time and moderate activities were low (q = -0.19 and q = 0.23, respectively) and not statistically significant (p values[0.05), but not for vigorous activities (q = 0.62; p.05). No significant correlation was found between minutes of accelerometer measured sedentary time, moderate, and vigorous activity and aerobic fitness or psychological responses to acute exercise (p values[0.05). Conclusion This study identifies prolonged time spent being sedentary each day and poor perception of individual sedentary time and moderate activities among high school students, irrespective of aerobic fitness and psychological responses to acute exercise. Interventions to minimize sedentary time are recommended to ensure that the school environment does not adversely affect long-term health.
