الوصف: In this paper, we propose linearly implicit and arbitrary high-order conservative numerical schemes for ordinary differential equations with a quadratic invariant. Many differential equations have invariants, and numerical schemes for preserving them have been extensively studied. Since linear invariants can be easily kept after discretisation, quadratic invariants are essentially the simplest ones. Quadratic invariants are important objects that appear not only in many physical examples but also in the computationally efficient conservative schemes for general invariants such as scalar auxiliary variable approach, which have been studied in recent years. It is known that quadratic invariants can be kept relatively easily compared to general invariants, and indeed can be preserved by canonical Runge--Kutta methods. However, there is no unified method for constructing linearly implicit and high order conservative schemes. In this paper, we construct such schemes based on canonical Runge--Kutta methods and prove some properties involving accuracy.

مستخلص: A system for the application of mascara. The system has a container and an applicator wand. The applicator wand has a handle that extends along a central axis. A wand shaft extends from the handle and hold a brush head. The brush head includes a brush held in an articulable mount. The articulable mount orients the brush in a position where the central axis of the handle intersects the center line of the brush at a point between the ends of the brush. The brush is biased to a first angle of inclination. The articulable mount provides a hinge joint between the brush and the wand shaft. The hinge joint enables the brush to temporarily rotate about the hinge joint away from its first angle of inclination and into a second angle of inclination to pass into or out of the access opening of the container.

الوصف: This report from the UK Open University is based on an innovation targeting students from disadvantaged backgrounds with low prior entry qualifications. The University’s Access programme has registered around 4,000 students annually since 2013, but a significant number of new students who might need a preparatory experience choose to enter directly at undergraduate level (as open access, permits). Internal data suggests that this has a negative impact on undergraduate retention and success as many students are insufficiently prepared. As partial mitigation, the Access team ‘telescoped’ a part-time Access module from 30 weeks to 18 and timed it to enable students to progress to undergraduate study in one academic year, therefore not adding an additional year to study time. As a result, a new demographic was attracted, more focused on the benefits of preparing for higher education. Initial evaluation revealed this group were highly motivated, and had significantly higher progression rates onto further study than conventional Access students. The authors suggest HE participation and success could be widened by giving greater attention to the needs of learners returning to study, particularly in relation to the flexibility, duration and timing of preparatory provision.

الوصف: The conditions for a Runge--Kutta method to be of order $p$ with $p\ge 5$ for a scalar non-autonomous problem are a proper subset of the order conditions for a vector problem. Nevertheless, Runge--Kutta methods that were derived historically only for scalar problems happened to be of the same order for vector problems. We relate the order conditions for scalar problems to factorisations of the Runge--Kutta trees into "atomic stumps" and enumerate those conditions up to $p=20$. Using a special search procedure over unsatisfied order conditions, new Runge--Kutta methods of "ambiguous orders" five and six are constructed. These are used to verify the validity of the results.

الوصف: Collaboration is often seen as a palliative for the many wicked problems challenging our communities. These problems affect some of the most vulnerable and unempowered people in our community. They also carry significant implications for policy processes, programs of service and, ultimately, the budgets and resourcing of national and sub-national governments. The road to collaboration is paved with good intentions. But, as John Butcher and David Gilchrist reveal, 'good intentions' are not enough to ensure well-designed, effective and sustainable collaborative action. Contemporary policy-makers and policy practitioners agree that ‘wicked’ problems in public policy require collaborative approaches, especially when those problems straddle sectoral, institutional, organisational and jurisdictional boundaries. The authors set out to uncover the core ingredients of good collaboration practice by talking directly to the very people that are engaged in collaborative action. This book applies the insights drawn from conversations with those engaged in collaborations for social purpose—including chief executives, senior managers and frontline workers—to the collaboration challenge. Backed up by an extensive review of the collaboration literature, Butcher and Gilchrist translate their observations into concrete guidance for collaborative practice. The unique value in this book is the authors’ combination of scholarly work with practical suggestions for current and prospective collaborators.

الوصف: Background: This review aimed to synthesize the evidence on infection prevention and control interventions for the prevention of health care–associated infection among health care workers or patients within primary care facilities. Methods: PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, and CENTRAL databases were searched for quantitative studies published between 2011 and 2022. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment using Cochrane and Joanna Briggs tools, were conducted by independent review with additional sensitivity checking performed on study selection. Results: Four studies were included. A randomized trial and a cross-sectional survey, respectively, found no statistical difference in laboratory-confirmed influenza in health care workers wearing N95 versus medical masks (P = .18) and a significant inverse association between the implementation of tuberculosis control measures and tuberculosis incidence (P = .02). For the prevention of surgical site infections following minor surgery, randomized trials found nonsterile gloves (8.7%; 95% confidence interval, 4.9%-12.6%) to be noninferior to sterile gloves (9.3%; 95% confidence interval, 7.4%-11.1%) and no significant difference between prophylactic antibiotics compared to placebo (P = .064). All studies had a high risk of bias. Conclusions: Evidence for infection prevention and control interventions for the prevention of health care–associated infection in primary care is very limited and insufficient to make practice recommendations. Nevertheless, the findings highlight the need for future research.
