الوصف: Sewage sludge (biosolids) management represents a worldwide issue. Due to its valuable properties, approximately one half of the EU production is recovered in agriculture. Nevertheless, growing attention is given to potential negative effects deriving from the presence of harmful pollutants. It is recognized that a (even very detailed) chemical characterization is not able to predict ecotoxicity of a mixture. However, this can be directly measured by bioassays. Actually, the choice of the most suitable tests is still under debate. This paper presents a multilevel characterization protocol of sewage sludge and other organic residues, based on bioassays and chemical-physical-microbiological analyses. The detailed description of the experimental procedure includes all the involved steps: the criteria for selecting the organic matrices to be tested and compared; the sample pre-treatment required before the analyses execution; the chemical, physical and microbiological characterisation; the bioassays, grouped in three classes (baseline toxicity; specific mode of action; reactive mode of action); data processing. The novelty of this paper lies in the integrated use of advanced tools, and is based on three pillars: • the direct ecosafety assessment of the matrices to be reused. • the adoption of innovative bioassays and analytical procedures. • the original criteria for data normalization and processing.

الوصف: Images, imagination and imaginary. Richard Kearney and the not so mournful wake of postmodernism. This essay aims to locate The Wake of Immaginationwithin Richard Kearney’s scholarly research and relate it to current theorizations of postmodernism, with a focus on the function served by images, imagination and imagery in the postmodern context. In so doing, it questions the philosophical grounds of Kearney’s investigation, his genealogy of the concept of imagination throughout the centuries and across cultures, and his subsequent analysis of the contemporary age and its idiosyncrasies: from image addiction, through the crisis of creative imagination, to the persistence of an ethic imagery still able to articulate possible narratives that are responsive to the demands of the Other.

الوصف: According to the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, the ideals of many of the rebels who fought in the 1916 Easter Rising to free the country from a foreign power have not yet been attained by today’s Republic: among these ideals Higgins listed wealth redistribution, eradication of inequalities and progressive positions on women’s rights. The idea that the task taken on by the 1916 Rising is yet to be accomplished is widespread in Ireland and has often turned into a rhetorical strategy in texts addressing very different topics within different discourses. This paper aims to investigate how the futurology inherent in today’s collective memory of 1916 was revisited by Yes and No campaigners in the mainstream debate prior to the same-sex marriage referendum in 2015. Accordingly, the tools of Corpus-Based Critical Discourse Studies are employed to analyse how the potential outcomes of the referendum were framed by both Yes and No sides as (contrasting) accomplishments of a nationalist and supposedly republican agenda.

الوصف: Although Ethiopia has been scaling up the antiretroviral therapy (ART) services, low retention in care of patients remains one of the main obstacles to treatment success. We report data on retention in care and its associated determinants in Tigray, Ethiopia. We used data from the CASA project, a prospective observational and multi-site study of a cohort of HIV-infected patients who initiated ART for the first time in Tigray. Four participating health facilities (HFs) located in the South of Tigray were considered for this study. Patients were followed for one year after ART initiation. The main outcome measure was represented by the current retention in care, defined as the proportion of patients who were alive and receiving ART at the same HF one year after ART initiation. Patients who started ART between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013 were included in this analysis. Patients were followed for one year after ART initiation. The determinants of retention were analysed using univariate and multivariate Cox Proportional Hazards model with robust sandwich estimates to account for within HF correlation. The four participating HFs in Tigray were able to retain overall 85.1% of their patients after one year from starting ART. Loss to follow-up (5.5%) and transfers to other HF (6.6) were the main determinant of attrition. A multivariate analysis shows that the factors significantly associated with retention were the type of HF, gender and active TB. Alamata health center was the HF with the highest attrition rate (HR 2.99, 95% CI: 2.77-3.23). Active TB (HR 1.72, 95% CI: 1.23-2.41) and gender (HR 1.64, 95% CI: 1.10-2.56) were also significantly associated with attrition.Although Ethiopia has significantly improved access to the ART program, achieving and maintaining a satisfactory long-term retention rate is a future goal. This is difficult because of different retention rates among HFs. Moreover specific interventions should be directed to people of different sex to improve retention in care in male population.

الوصف: This study had the dual objective of both the qualitative and quantitative assessment of plastic mixtures sampled in 5 different sites located along the Lambro River (northern Italy), and the contemporarily determination of the ecotoxicological effects of the same mixtures sampled, through 21-day laboratory exposures of the freshwater bivalve Dreissena polymorpha. The monitoring survey was carried out by a Fourier Transform Infrared Microscope System, while the ecotoxicological assessment was performed by the mussel mortality, a biomarker suite and the proteomics. The main results of the monitoring have highlighted some critical points, related to the concentration of plastics detected at Milan and, especially at the southernmost sampling station, where a daily flow of more than 6 million plastic debris has been estimated, ending directly into the Po River, the main Italian river. The ecotoxicological analysis highlighted how the toxicity is not exclusively due to the plastic concentration, but that the different characteristics of the polymers probably become more important. Furthermore, we observed an extensive mortality of bivalves exposed to the sampled mixtures in the two southernmost sampling stations, while the battery of biomarkers and the results of proteomics have highlighted how the sampled plastic mixtures caused an imbalance in the redox state, already indicated as a classic effect due to plastic exposure, but also an impact on energy stock and on some fundamental cellular pathways always linked to energy metabolism.

الوصف: Microplastics are water-insoluble, solid polymer particles that are ≤5 mm in size. A lower size boundary has not been defined, but particles below 1 μm are usually referred to as nanoplastics rather than microplastics. The ubiquity of microplastics of all sizes in surface water, groundwater and wastewater has raised the question if pollution of drinking water occurs and to date, few studies indeed described the presence of this new contaminant in tap and bottled water. Toxicity it is not yet known, they might cause local inflammations in the gut, but a transport into organs might occur. As a final problem in this field, microplastics in the environment are difficult to sample, to identify and standardized methods do not exist. For this reason, we have been involved in a research project finalized to the definition of a protocol strategy for sampling and analysis of microplastics in drinking waters, coming from deep water wells, in the networks of three large cities in the Northern part of Italy. The project is on going and presently two groups of deep water samples have been collected in the city of Milano and Brescia, before and after the treatment stages used for the urban network. Great attention has been paid to sampling and extraction steps as microplastic contamination, in this kind of samples, is expected to be very low and contamination during sampling might occur through air or materials. Analytical methods have been defined for the detection of main microplastic contamination, like PE/PP, PS, PA, PVC e PET residues > 1 μm. Samples have been analysed first by a non-destructive approach using a Spotlight 200i microscope equipped with a μATR probe and coupled to an FT-IR spectrophotometer, followed by a mass spectrometric characterization of the polymers by a solid phase microextration (SPME) GC-MS of thermal decomposition products (TED) of microplastic residues. Results will be presented and critically discussed.

الوصف: The water-soluble polymers (WSPs) are widely used in many industrial applications and are present in several com- monly used products due to their physical-chemical characteristics: as their name indicates, despite being synthetic polymers, they are able to solubilize in water. Because of this peculiar property, both the qualitative-quantitative eval- uation in aquatic ecosystems and their potential (eco)toxicological effects have been neglected until now. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible effects of three of the most widely used WSPs as polyacrylic acid (PAA), poly- ethylene glycol (PEG) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) on the swimming behaviour of zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos after the exposure to different concentrations (0.001, 0.5, 1 mg/L). The exposure lasted from the eggs' collection up to 120 h post fertilization (hpf) also using three different light intensity (300 lx, 2200 lx, 4400 lx) to better evaluate any effects related to different gradients of light/dark transitions. In order to analyze individual behavioural changes in em- bryos, their swimming movements were tracked and a number of parameters for locomotion and directionality were quantified. The main results showed that all three WSPs resulted in significant (p ≤ 0.05) variations in different move- ment parameters, suggesting a possible toxicity scale: PVP > PEG ≫ PAA.
