الوصف: Urban areas are negatively impacted by Carbon Dioxide (CO2 ) and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions. In order to achieve a cost-effective reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and to combat climate change, the European Union (EU) introduced an Emissions Trading System (ETS) where organizations can buy or receive emission allowances as needed. The current ETS is a centralized one, consisting of a set of complex rules. It is currently administered at the organizational level and is used for fixed-point sources of pollution such as factories, power plants, and refineries. However, the current ETS cannot efficiently cope with vehicle mobility, even though vehicles are one of the primary sources of CO2 and NOx emissions. In this study, we propose a new distributed Blockchain-based emissions allowance trading system called B-ETS. This system enables transparent and trustworthy data exchange as well as trading of allowances among vehicles, relying on vehicle-to-vehicle communication. In addition, we introduce an economic incentive-based mechanism that appeals to individual drivers and leads them to modify their driving behavior in order to reduce emissions. The efficiency of the proposed system is studied through extensive simulations, showing how increased vehicle connectivity can lead to a reduction of the emissions generated from those vehicles. We demonstrate that our method can be used for full life-cycle monitoring and fuel economy reporting. This leads us to conjecture that the proposed system could lead to important behavioral changes among the drivers

الوصف: This paper provides insights into role modeling by educators in computing that is beyond the technical, theoretical and rational perspectives which have historically been described as dominant in computing. Surveying 199 educators in higher education, we have built on frameworks of role modeling, care, emotions, and professional competencies as a lens to see different ways of engaging in computing. Our quantitative and qualitative findings show how educators model ways of caring (for oneself, other humans and living species, technology, and the planet), emotions, professional competencies and other types of role modeling. Examples of contexts within computing and reasons why an educator can(not) model these aspects bring new light to research on care and emotions being shown in computing. This work contributes to a better understanding of computing educators as potential role models, particularly in terms of displaying emotions and various types of care. Our work can support ways of developing the professional competences of computing educators and the teaching culture of computing departments. Our findings may inspire other educators to think about their own display of emotions and care, and what this transmits to their students. Thus, the work also contributes to the discussion of ways to increase diversity among students and equitable access to computing education.

الوصف: Mobile devices with embedded sensors for data collection and environmental sensing create a basis for a cost-effective approach for data trading. For example, these data can be related to pollution and gas emissions, which can be used to check the compliance with national and international regulations. The current approach for IoT data trading relies on a centralized third-party entity to negotiate between data consumers and data providers, which is inefficient and insecure on a large scale. In comparison, a decentralized approach based on distributed ledger technologies (DLT) enables data trading while ensuring trust, security, and privacy. However, due to the lack of understanding of the communication efficiency between sellers and buyers, there is still a significant gap in benchmarking the data trading protocols in IoT environments. Motivated by this knowledge gap, we introduce a model for DLT-based IoT data trading over the Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) system, intended to support massive environmental sensing. We characterize the communication efficiency of three basic DLT-based IoT data trading protocols via NB-IoT connectivity in terms of latency and energy consumption. The model and analyses of these protocols provide a benchmark for IoT data trading applications.

الوصف: Transportation agencies across the United States have the responsibility of providing transportation services for all travelers. Paratransit services which are designed to meet the needs of disabled travelers have been available to a certain extent for decades, but under the Americans with Disabilities Act mandate of 1990, uniform requirements were adopted across U.S. agencies. Most of these paratransit operators offer services which must be scheduled at least a day in advance. And, provision of these services by accessible busses is generally very expensive. Therefore, many agencies are considering sub-contracting some services to approved ride-hailing or taxi services. The purpose of this work is to examine the opinions of various public agencies with respect to the adoption of sub-contracted services through the use of secure technologies. Our research provides insight into the future of these partnerships. Agencies expressed interest in the use of privacy preserving secure technologies as well as a strong desire for better software solutions for paratransit passengers and operators. The on-line survey received thirty responses for a completion rate of 19.1%. Our primary findings are that a major concern of agencies for this sort of arrangement is the lack of Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles offered by taxis and TNCs and about 36% of the surveyed agencies have not considered such partnerships.

الوصف: Background & Aims: Acute decompensation (AD) of cirrhosis is defined as the acute development of ascites, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, hepatic encephalopathy, infection or any combination thereof, requiring hospitalization. The presence of organ failure(s) in patients with AD defines acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). The PREDICT study is a European, prospective, observational study, designed to characterize the clinical course of AD and to identify predictors of ACLF. Methods: A total of 1,071 patients with AD were enrolled. We collected detailed pre-specified information on the 3-month period prior to enrollment, and clinical and laboratory data at enrollment. Patients were then closely followed up for 3 months. Outcomes (liver transplantation and death) at 1 year were also recorded. Results: Three groups of patients were identified. Pre-ACLF patients (n = 218) developed ACLF and had 3-month and 1-year mortality rates of 53.7% and 67.4%, respectively. Unstable decompensated cirrhosis (UDC) patients (n = 233) required ≥1 readmission but did not develop ACLF and had mortality rates of 21.0% and 35.6%, respectively. Stable decompensated cirrhosis (SDC) patients (n = 620) were not readmitted, did not develop ACLF and had a 1-year mortality rate of only 9.5%. The 3 groups differed significantly regarding the grade and course of systemic inflammation (high-grade at enrollment with aggravation during follow-up in pre-ACLF; low-grade at enrollment with subsequent steady-course in UDC; and low-grade at enrollment with subsequent improvement in SDC) and the prevalence of surrogates of severe portal hypertension throughout the study (high in UDC vs. low in pre-ACLF and SDC). Conclusions: Acute decompensation without ACLF is a heterogeneous condition with 3 different clinical courses and 2 major pathophysiological mechanisms: systemic inflammation and portal hypertension. Predicting the development of ACLF remains a major future challenge. ClinicalTrials.gov number: NCT03056612. Lay summary: Herein, we describe, ...

الوصف: Advancements in Information and Communication Technologies have led to the proliferation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). These systems leverage emerging technologies to address the challenges of traditional transportation systems. As the number of connected devices continues to increase, smart cities and communities are reliant on ITS as apart of their ecosystems. ITS are efficient and sustainable mobility systems that leverage emerging technologies to securely interact with other transportation systems and entities. This dis- sertation explores three case studies in privacy preserving contracting and communication among vehicles in transportation systems. The first case involves paratransit systems where we explore paratransit agency adoption of complementary ride-hailing services through se- cure contracting. The second case involves Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks in which we analyze the communication and data exchange between vehicles in the network. In the last case, we introduce smart infrastructure in the analysis of ITS and traffic in smart city environments by modeling the shift in traffic behaviors through the use of dynamic traffic lights. The major contributions of this dissertation are in the analysis of the communication, security and sustainability in the three case studies.

الوصف: In this study, for the first time, the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tyrosinase and antimicrobial property of P. atlantica Desf. subsp. atlantica leaf-bud extracthave been investigated. The anti-inflammatory activity was determined in vivo by reducing carrageenan-induced hind paw edema in mice, while the antiradical function was evaluated using DPPH, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and reduction power assays. The extract induced a significant reduction of the edema, from 1 to 6h in a dose-dependent manner (150, 200 and 300mg/kg). Histological observations of the inflamed tissues also confirmed this. An effective antioxidant activity of the plant samples was demonstrated, showing an EC50 = 0.183 ± 0.005mg/mL for the DPPH test, a value of 28.776 ± 2.541mg AAE/g for the TAC and an EC50 = 0.136 ± 0.003mg/mL for reducing power. The leaf-bud extract also revealed a good antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and L. monocytogenes (mean diameter of inhibition zones of 13.2 and 17.0mm, respectively), while a slight antifungal effect was observed. The plant preparation was then documented to inhibit tyrosinase activity, with an EC50 value of 0.098 ± 0.00mg/mL in a dose-dependent manner. HPLC–DAD analysis revealed that dimethyl-allyl caffeic acid and rutin were the most abundant molecules. The current data documented that P. atlantica leaf-bud extract has strong biological properties and constitutes a potential source of pharmacological molecules.
