مستخلص: About 5,000 people have died annually from suicide in England and Wales during the last decade. Another factor which has for a long time been known to increase the danger of suicide is increased consumption of alcohol. Changes in the age and sex composition of a community can lead to a serious increase of the suicide rate. This was shown by a comparative investigation into the causes of striking discrepancies between the suicide rates of two urban populations in the industrial North of England. This formidable part of the general population presents a group with an above average risk of suicide. If doctors and social agencies could reduce the danger of suicide among this group alone, a considerable reduction of the suicide rate would be achieved. For a variety of reasons it is difficult to get to know of those people. Suicidal attempts tend to be concealed.
