مستخلص: The article discusses findings of a study which investigated the degradation products of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) formed during ozonation and the effects of these products on mammalian cultured cells. Examples of degradation products detected include alcohols, nitrates and sulfanilamide. Considered as the most prescribed antibiotic in the U.S., SMX is a bacteriostatic antibiotic which interferes with the production of dihydrofolate often prescribed with trimethoprim (TMP), an antibiotic that binds to bacterial dihydrofolate reductase.
