The authors comment on a study published within the issue which illustrated that HSV-2 treatment on HIV transmission has no evident benefit in about 3400 African serodiscordant heterosexual couples. The study further demonstrated that the effect of immediate antiretroviral therapy could depend on characteristics of the sexual-partner network and under certain assumptions, proved negative. The significance of the trial to the formulation of HIV prevention and treatment campaign in South Africa is highlighted by the authors. |
