مستخلص: A complex study of the influence of the thermal pretreatment of X cut lithium niobate plates (JSC Fomos-Materials, Russia) on the formation of proton-exchange planar waveguides has been performed using structural and optical methods. The thermal pretreatment is found to reduce the strains and dislocation density in thermally treated proton-exchange waveguides. It is shown that structural phase transformations during post-annealing occur more rapidly in homogenized samples. The results obtained are important for designing lithium niobate-based phase and amplitude modulators with stable characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
