مستخلص: The article focuses on the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), knowledge and attitudes of health-care workers in Mexico. It assesses Mexican health-care workers' AIDS knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral intentions or willingness to provide care to patients with AIDS. It also explores the relationship of intention to provide care with the following variables: AIDS knowledge, attitudes toward high-risk groups fear of AIDS contagion, and demographic characteristics. The sample consisted of 204 health care workers: 171 were employed in a public charity hospital and 33 in private doctors' offices. The descriptive analyses suggest a relatively high level, of AIDS knowledge on the part of the respondents. The majority also indicated a willingness to provide care for AIDS patients. Fear of contagion, however, was widespread. The findings seem contradictory because these health-care workers were, for the most part, aware of the modes of AIDS transmission and the universal precautions; therefore, they should have felt relatively safe from the threat of infection. They were not required to engage in high-risk behaviors on the job, and when it was necessary to handle liquid specimens, they seemed aware that they should use the universal precautions, which drastically reduce the infection risk.
