الوصف: International audience ; Feeding strategies in early life have been shown to modulate piglet gut health, but effects on disease susceptibility have yet to be explained. We aim ed to study effects of dietary-fibre-enriched diets fed to sows around farrowing (transition diet) and to suckling piglets (creep feed) on post-weaning gut health of piglets challenged with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). Piglets received either a low-or high-fibre creep feed, and their sows were fed a low-or one of three high-fibre transition diets with lucerne, sugar beet pulp or both. Upon weaning, all piglets were fed the same diet and received an oral dose of a porcine F4 + , LT + and STb + ETEC strain on day 4 post-weaning. Faecal consistency was scored and faeces collected daily until piglets were sacrificed on day 5 postinoculation. Faecal consistency decreased significantly after ETEC inoculation (P < 0,001). The percentage of haemolytic ETEC-like colonies increased from 0% before inoculation to 50% on day 1 post-inoculation. Piglets classified as eaters of creep feed at weaning weighed more on day 9 post-weaning than non-eaters of creep feed (10.4 ± 0.2 vs 9.2 ± 0.5 kg; P < 0.05). Early-life feeding strategies did not lead to significant differences in post-weaning intestine weight or digesta pH. Effects on gut microbiota, volatile fatty acids, cytokines and ETEC excretion are being analysed and will be described in the future. ; Les problèmes gastro intestinaux sont parmi les principales causes de morbidité, de mortalité et d’emploi des antibiotiques en production porcine.
