The article explores the role of bamboo-based cottage industry to the economic development in the rural areas of Chittagong, Bangladesh. It presents a survey focused on households involved in bamboo-based cottage industry, to evaluate factors including socio-economic status of the households, sources of raw material, economics, gender role, marketing of the products and problems of the industry. It reveals that eleven types of articles are created from bamboo and the anticipated total annual income from constructing bamboo articles to a family in the location being studied is US$ 1,078. It furthers that 66 percent of the members employed in bamboo-based cottage industry are women. |
