مستخلص: Patrick Longhurst, vice president and manager of the employee benefits department of Johnson & Higgins in Toronto, Ontario, speaking at a 1987 International Foundation of Employee Benefits seminar in Orlando, Florida remarked that many of his clients are contemplating a return to first principles or a fresh start altogether. He noted that experts have been studying the benefits system in Canada for about 10 years now, all the while assuring everyone that a published report of their findings is imminent. On January 1, 1987 the Canada Pension plan took a new course. Longhurst remarked that drastic changes were made in retirement age benefits. Another benefit concern that according to Longhurst should be factored into pension plan design is the question of contributions. The current required contribution amount stands at 1.8 percent for both employers and employees--a real bargain when one consider that by the year 2011 the proposed increase would hike the rate employers and employees have to pay to 3.8 or total of 7.6 percent. At the provincial level, Longhurst added that an effort has been made to hammer out a consensus position that would instill uniformity in pension legislation across Canada.
