مستخلص: The super large-size line-shape CaO-Al2O3-MgO inclusions in high-carbon chromium bearing steel were studied by conducting industrial sampling and thermodynamic analyses. The mechanisms of agglomeration and clustering of CaO-Al2O3-MgO were revealed. It was found that the super large-size line-shape CaO-Al2O3-MgO inclusions are longer than 5 mm in length and about 100 μm in width. The average composition of these inclusions is 65 mass pct Al2O3-35 mass pct (CaO + MgO). These inclusions are formed by the aggregation of small-size inclusions with diameters ranging from several microns to tens of microns. These small-size inclusions are generated from liquid or semi liquid inclusions which can be formed directly when the local liquid steel composition including [Al], [O], [Ca], [Mg] reaches a certain range in the refining process. During the cooling process, CaAl2O4 will mainly precipitate in the outer layer of the liquid inclusions and the cavity bridge force is the main force to promote the agglomeration of inclusions. Then it only takes several seconds to accomplish the initial sintering at a temperature of 1673 K. The small-size inclusions which cannot be removed by floating will agglomerate and sinter gradually resulting in inclusions clusters. Finally, the inclusion clusters are captured by the solidification front one by one and form super large-size line-shape inclusions after rolling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
