The article examines the results of the Spine Outcomes Research Trial studies (SPORT), which compare outcomes of surgery with those of nonoperative therapy for the indications for elective adult spine surgery. It determines the implications of using effectiveness rather than efficacy data in the cost-effectiveness analysis. The SPORT found that the cost-effectiveness of surgery for spinal stenosis is similar to the cost-effectiveness of other interventions that society pays for routinely. |
