It's a term used to describe a security that combines elements of debt securities (think bonds) and equity securities (shares). Both bank and corporate hybrid securities have a combination of debt and equity characteristics; however, historically corporate hybrid securities have been more debt-like compared with bank tier 1 hybrids. Accordingly, hybrid securities that are perceived to have higher risk attached to them will generally attract a potential higher rate of return, whereas hybrid securities that are perceived to have a lower risk will generally attract a lower return.
