The author reflects on changes which have been seen since ancient times in social and medical attitudes towards the human body. She suggests that as a mixture of bones, flesh and organs, the human body no longer carries the spiritual or psychological weighting that it did in the 17th and 18th centuries. She argues that political and ethical debates in 2008 over ownership and control of the human body render it as troublesome as it ever was. |
