Synthesis, characterization and anti-HIV activity of polycarboxylic [60]fullerene derivatives obtained in the reaction of C60Cl6 with a hydroquinone ether
We report the preparation and characterization of five new [60]fullerene derivatives formed in the novel reaction of C60Cl6 with dimethyl 2,2′-(1,4-phenylenebis-(oxy))diacetate, which were isolated by preparative HPLC and characterized by APCI-MS, 1H, 13C, and 2D NMR spectroscopy. Acidic hydrolysis of the ester groups in the synthesized compounds produced a series of water-soluble fullerene derivatives, which demonstrated pronounced activities against Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) replication. Correlations between the structures of the fullerene derivatives and their antiviral activity were established.
