This article presents information on the Presidency in Ireland from January to June 2004. Ireland, which held the Presidency from January to June 2004, inherited a busy European Union work programme from the Italians and found itself in the driving seat at a key historical moment. It was likely to be a high-profile Presidency in the light of the Intergovernmental Conference, the impeding enlargement and the appointment of the new Commission President. The Irish Presidency's work programme, Europeans -- Working Together, concentrated on four principal priorities: completing a successful enlargement, the Lisbon strategy ,initiatives in the area of justice and home affairs and global engagement with a particular focus on working towards improved relations with the U.S. |
