The article provides an understanding of the mammalian circadian system and explains the six circadian rhythm sleep disorders (CRSDs). CRSDs are broadly classified into intrinsic, which is characterized by asynchrony between the patient's cycle of sleep-wake and the external day-night cycle, and extrinsic, which results from an imposed alteration in the behavioral timing of sleep and wakefulness. These CRSDs include delayed sleep-phase disorder, free-running disorder and shift-work disorder. |
