مستخلص: The article presents a systematic review of the evidence regarding the accuracy of the physical examination for determining whether a patient has pleural effusion. The MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched for English-language studies. Reference standard, diagnostic tests, participant recruitment, and test accuracy were extracted. Researchers concluded that dullness to percussion and tactile fremitus are most useful for determining pleural effusion. Pleural effusion is more likely with dull chest percussion, although chest radiograph is required. The absence of reduced tactile vocal fremitus makes pleural effusion less likely when pretest probability is low. Two patient case scenarios are presented.
