Following the trend of cities throughout the United States subsidizing new baseball stadiums within their economic redevelopment strategies, in 2005, the city government of Washington, D.C. agreed to subsidize the construction of Nationals Park for the use of the Washington Nationals baseball team. In its design of the stadium, HOK Sport architects sought to represent the "transparency of democracy" as they were inspired by the democratic image and iconography of the US Capital city. Using a perspective based in Lefebvre's (1991b) production of space, I explore the power relations produced and reproduced within spatial and cultural production. I argue that instead of creating an inclusive space, architects designed a space that exemplifies the late capitalist moment in its focus on consumption, social control, and aesthetic production. Nationals Park, thus, excludes people by class, privileges visitors over residents, and provides an unrealistic view of the city that marginalizes less powerful groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |

En suivant la tendance des villes américaines dont les subventions aux nouveaux stades de base-ball font partie des stratégies de redéveloppement économique, le gouvernement municipal de Washington D.C. a accepté en 2005 de subventionner la construction du parc Nationals pour les fins de l'équipe de base-ball des Nationals de Washington. Dans leur design du stade, les architectes de la firme HOK Sport ont voulu représenter la « transparence de la démocratie » car ils ont été inspirés par l'iconographie de démocratie de la capitale américaine. En utilisant une perspective fondée sur les écrits de Lefebvre (1991) sur la production de l'espace, j'explore les relations de pouvoir produites et reproduites au sein d'une production spatiale et culturelle. Je soutiens que plutôt que de créer un espace inclusif, les architectes ont conçu un espace qui illustre un moment du capitalisme avancé avec sa focalisation sur la consommation, le contrôle social et la production esthétique. Le parc Nationals, donc, exclut les gens selon leur classe sociale, privilégie les visiteurs par rapport aux résidents et offre une vue irréaliste de la ville qui marginalise les groupes moins puissants.
