مستخلص: The article discusses a study on the benefit of preoperative radiotherapy combined with infusional 5-fluorouracil (FU) followed by total mesorectal excision (TME) in treating patients with T3 or lymph node-positive rectal cancer in the U.S. Some of the novel agents used for the preoperative chemoradiation include Capecitabine, Oxaliplatin and Irinotecan. The study suggests that adding newer cytotoxic agents to preoperative fluoro-pyrimidine-based chemoradiation in patients with locally advanced rectal may enhance pathologic response rates.
