الوصف: We frequently face situations where only one person in a group is required to incur a cost to solve a problem for the entire group; if someone volunteers, everyone benefits, but if nobody does, everyone pays a cost greater than the cost of volunteering. This is known as the volunteer's dilemma (VoD). In the VoD, some are likely to volunteer, while others are not. Through a scenario-based experiment, we found that individuals' willingness to volunteer is substantially predicted by their justice sensitivity (JS), indicated by individual differences in reactions toward unfairness or injustice. Specifically, those who are sensitive to unjustly suffering an unfavorable outcome (high in JSVictim) are less willing to volunteer, and those who are sensitive to unjustly receiving a favorable outcome (high in JSBeneficiary) are more willing to volunteer. We also investigated the effects of justice-related emotions and found that anger at the expectation of being the only volunteer in the group mediates the negative effect of JSVictim on willingness to volunteer, while guilt at the expectation of letting somebody else volunteer is not a robust mediator of the positive effect of JSBeneficiary on willingness to volunteer.

الوصف: Two studies examined the effect of interpersonal attitude on reactions toward others' expression of anger or depression, Participants read a story in which their schoolmate experienced a negative event and expressed anger or depression, and reported their perceptions, affective reactions, and behavioural intentions such as support or rejection. The results indicated that an expression of anger elicited more negative reactions than an expression of depression only when a person whom participants disliked expressed the emotion. Furthermore, structural equation modelling indicated that the effect of interpersonal attitude on sympathy, blame, and support intention was mediated by the perception of the distressfulness of the event. The discussion considered the processes through which the expression of negative emotions evokes positive or negative interpersonal reactions.

الوصف: Attributional studies of helping have examined perceivers affective responses and helping intentions as a function of responsibility (controllability) for the onset of a problem. This study extended the analysis to a responsibility for the solution (offset) of a problem and examined how the cause of both the onset and the offset of a problem determined perceivers' affective responses and helping intentions. One hundred and eighty subjects participated in the study. The subjects read one of three stories regarding the target person's behavior at the onset of falling behind in school (“sick” vs. “effort” vs. “no effort”) and reported their perceptions of the cause of the problem, affective responses, and helping intentions. Then they read one of three stories regarding the target person's behavior for the offset of the problem (“sick” vs. “effort” vs. “no effort”:' and responded again to the previously administered scales. Results indicated (a) that the final responses were strongly determined by the offset information. and (b) that sickness at the time of the onset led to negative affect and less helping intention when the offset information was “no effort.” The latter effect is discussed within the context of the moral judgment. Furthermore, structural equation analyses for the responses after the offset information revealed (a) that Weiner's “attribution-emotion-helping” model was applicable. and (b) that the effect of the effort perception on the helping intention was mediated by anger and pity.

الوصف: This study examined reactions toward an expression of anger or guilt. Participants' reactions were assessed after their partner for a collaborative task expressed anger or guilt due to failure on the task. Analysis indicated that participants inferred the attribution of responsibility made by the partner based on the expressed emotions; anger elicited an inference that the partner attributed the failure to the participant, while guilt led to an inference that the partner attributed the failure to the self. Further, expressers of anger were perceived as having more negative traits and were avoided more than those who expressed guilt. Discussion considered negative interpersonal effect of an expression of anger.
