In a fast-paced work environment, recovery moments from the job, as well as leisure activities at work, can be scarce. Since all employees need breaks throughout the day to recover their energy and will, it is important to understand how recovery influences their well-being during the day. Previous studies have shown that recovery through long breaks (e.g., weekends or vacations), promotes well-being, work engagement, and proactive attitudes. However, little investigation has been given to analyze recovery through short breaks (lunch breaks). The present daily-diary study bridges this gap and aims to understand how lunch breaks promote well-being. To do this, we relied on the effort-recovery model to hypothesize that work engagement could mediate the path from recovery during lunch breaks and well-being. Additionally, tested whether daily harmony would moderate the indirect relationship between recovery during lunch breaks and well-being through work engagement. 40 participants were part of a 5-day diary study. Multilevel results showed that recovery during lunch breaks promoted well-being because work engagement became higher. In addition, harmony moderated this indirect relationship in a way that lower levels of daily harmony strengthened the indirect relationship between recovery during lunch breaks and well-being via work engagement. Thus, individuals who experience lower levels of harmony are more dependent on recovery moments to become engaged with their work, and happier. This study suggests emphasizing the importance of employees having time and moments that allow them to recover their energy, vigour, and positive affective states that drive their well-being. |
