A series of new oxovanadium(IV) complexes [VO(Sal: AA) (H2U)]2 are prepared and characterized. The ligands (Sal: AA) are bivalent tridentate Schiff bases derived from salicylaldehyde and various α-amino acids. Molecular weight determinations of solutions in benzene support this formulation. The magnetic properties are interpreted in terms of an antiferromagnetic interaction between pairs of oxovanadium(IV) ions in the complexes. One broad but well defined absorption band is observed in the 7,000–25,000 cm−1 region which is attributed to a d-d transition.
