; The following case study presents the possibilities offered by data virtualisation in the understanding of one of the oldest archaeologically attested surgical procedures: trepanning. The individual studied comes from the Saint-Cosme priory, an institution located 3 km from the centre of the city of Tours in France. The individual, buried between 1185 and 1350, has a trepanation on his left parietal bone. The operating methods and therapeutic motivations were discussed in the light of medieval medical texts, CT scans and virtual reconstructions of the individual's skull and endocranium. The analysis used innovative approaches in palaeopathology enabling the study of size (metric) and shape (geometric morphometrics). The modus operandi identified corresponds to the descriptions of the procedure by the physicians of the time. Trepanning seems to have been performed to treat neurological disorders and not, ... |
