الوصف: Trophic structure in intertidal benthic food webs of Marennes-Oléron Bay was evaluated using stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios. Isotopic composition of the commonest 40 species reveals no evidences for the contribution of terrestrial detritus to the intertidal consumers. The isotopic composition of primary (suspension- and deposit-feeders) and secondary consumers (predators and scavengers) indicated that their major carbon sources were originated from phytoplankton and microphytobenthos on all intertidal fiats. The relative importance of both sources was determined by feeding strategies but microphytobenthos is always the main diet for ail species. Some isotopic signatures for additional food sources were also found in some habitats indicating that detritical carbon from seagrass, Zostera noltii, could be a significant source for deposit-feeding species and their predators. We proposed a new attempt to elucidate the relationship between availability of diet and the secondary production of the cockle Cerastoderma edule, a suspension-feeder. Dual carbon and nitrogen isotope plot suggests that microphytobenthos and suspended POM are the main diet of cockles. Seasonal variations in the delta13C values of adult cockles were found (mild winter of 1994-1995, high riverine run-off), but no significant seasonal variations were noted for juvenile cockles, excepted spat in June. These intra-specific differences reflect higher dependence ofadult cockles on POM variability although spat and juveniles are closely linked to microphytobenthos. The relative contribution of POM and microphytobenthos to secondary production of cockles was assessed by using a simple stable isotope mixing mode!. Thus, 89 % and 63 % of annual secondary production came from microphytobenthos for juveniles and adults, respectively. It was estimated that 72 % of the overall annual secondary production of the cockle population resulted from microphytobenthos, strongly indicating the mediation through near-bed resuspension processes. Finally, our ...
