In March 2023, the first Turkish Cypriot producer of Hellim cheese received the certificate for protected designation of origin (PDO) according to the EU quality regulation. This means that in the European Union, only Halloumi/Hellim produced on the island of Cyprus can be marketed. Producers on both sides of the border between the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish part of the island now have the opportunity to have their products certified as PDO. It is expected that by the end of 2024, measures regarding animal health and hygiene requirements must be implemented for the Turkish Cypriot community to fully benefit from the EU quality regulation. Im März 2023 erhielt der erste türkisch-zyprische Hersteller von Hellim-Käse das Zertifikat für die geschützte Ursprungsbezeichnung (g.U.) gemäß der EU-Qualitätsregelung. Dies bedeutet, dass in der Europäischen Union nur Halloumi/Hellim vermarktet werden darf, der auf der Insel Zypern hergestellt wurde. Die Erzeuger auf beiden Seiten der Grenze zwischen der Republik Zypern und dem türkischen Teil der Insel haben nun die Möglichkeit, ihre Erzeugnisse als g.U. zertifizieren zu lassen. Es wird erwartet, dass bis Ende 2024 Maßnahmen in Bezug auf tierseuchen- und hygienerechtliche Anforderungen umgesetzt werden müssen, damit die türkisch-zyprische Gemeinschaft vollständig von der EU-Qualitätsregelung profitieren kann.
