The article reports that zoologist Alison Mercer of the University of Otago in New Zealand has discovered that homovanillyl alcohol (HVA), a queen bee uses to maintain control of her hive, is influencing brain chemistry. Mercer found that when young bees were exposed to HVA, they were incapable of learning to associate a bad experience with a smell, called aversive learning. He also found that HVA did not prevent the association of a good experience with a smell, called appetitive learning. |
