الوصف: Includes bibliographical references (leaf 98) ; California State University, Northridge. Department of Mathematics. ; Linear programming has proved itself to be an extremely powerful technique in the solution of certain problems in the field of operations research. The ideas were first developed during World War II in connection with finding optimal strategies for conducting the war effort. Since that time they have found wide application in industry, commerce and government service. The widespread use of linear programming is largely due to the advent of the digital computer. The development of fast computers has provided us with the necessary equipment to handle large problems. In 1947 George B. Dantzig proposed an algorithm that could be programmed on a computer. He originated the Simplex Method for solving linear programs. A linear program is characterized by a first degree function of n variables that is to be maximized or minimized, subject to a set of m first degree constraints. Since the variables in a linear program usually stand for quantities of physical objects, they are most often required to be nonnegative. [see more in text]
