الوصف: Proceedings of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Conference, 2008, p. 363-366 ; In this study, 10-day-old normal rats (n=6) and hypoxic-ischemic (H-I) neonatal rats (n=6) were injected with the micronsized iron oxide particles (MPIOs) into the anterior lateral ventricle. 2D and 3D high-spatial resolution MRI were performed with a 7T animal scanner 1 day before the MPIOs injection and hour 3, day 3, day 7 and day 14 after the MPIOs injection. Intraperitoneal injections of 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) were used to label newly produced cells, and were given thrice daily for 2 days before sacrifice. Immunohistochemistry and Prussian blue staining indicated that iron particles were inside the nestin+ and BrdU+ neural progenitor cells (NPCs), glial-fibrillary-acidic-protein-positive (GFAP+) astrocytes-like progenitor cells, and neuronal-nuclei-positive (NeuN+) mature neurons. Here we demonstrate that, in normal neonatal rat brain, the migrating pathway of the endogenous NPCs with MPIO is mainly along the rostral migratory stream to the olfactory bulb. In H-I neonatal rat brain, the migration of endogenous NPCs with MPIO is mainly towards the ischemic regions. Therefore, in vivo magnetic cell labeling of endogenous NPCs with MPIO and subsequently non-invasive, serial MRI monitoring should open up a new approach to probe into the mechanism of cell migration in the developmental brain under physiological and pathologic conditions. © 2008 IEEE. ; published_or_final_version

مستخلص: Hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the ventricles and cavities in the brain. It occurs when the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow or absorption is blocked or when excessive CSF is secreted. The excessive accumulation of CSF results in an abnormal widening of the ventricles. This widening creates potentially harmful pressure on the tissues of the brain. In this study, flow analysis of CSF was conducted on a three-dimensional model of the third ventricle and aqueduct of Sylvius, derived from MRI scans. CSF was modeled as Newtonian Fluid and its flow through the region of interest (ROI) was done using EFD. Lab software. Different steady flow rates through the Foramen of Monro, classified by normal and hydrocephalus cases, were modeled to investigate its effects. The results show that, for normal and hydrocephalus cases, the pressure drop of CSF flow across the third ventricle was observed to be linearly proportionally to the production rate increment. In conclusion, flow rates that cause pressure drop of 5 Pa was found to be the threshold for the initial sign of hydrocephalus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

الوصف: We investigated the effects of losartan, an AT 1-receptor blocker, and ramipril, a converting enzyme inhibitor, on the pressor response induced by angiotensin II (ANG II) and carbachol (a cholinergic receptor agonist). Male Holtzman rats (250-300 g) with a stainless steel cannula implanted into the lateral ventricle (LV) were used. The injection of losartan (50 nmol/l μl) into the LV blocked the pressor response induced by ANG II (12 ng/l μl) and carbachol (2 nmol/l μl). After injection of ANG II and carbachol into the LV, mean arterial pressure (MAP) increased to 31 ± 1 and 28 ± 2 mmHg, respectively. Previous injection of losartan abolished the increase in MAP induced by ANG II and carbachol into the LV (2 ± 1 and 5 ± 2 mmHg, respectively). The injection of ramipril (12 ng/l μl) prior to carbachol blocked the pressor effect of carbachol to 7 ± 3 mmHg. These results suggest an interaction between central cholinergic pathways and the angiotensinergic system in the regulation of arterial blood pressure.

الوصف: Recent neuroimaging and neuropathological studies suggest a developmental origin for schizophrenia. Some cases may, therefore, be caused by a genetic defect in the specification of brain development. Early environmental hazards such as obstetric complications, and maternal exposure during pregnancy to influenza epidemics, have also been found to increase the risk of later schizophrenia. The relationship between the prevalence of influenza and birth date has been found more consistently for female than male schizophrenics. Female schizophrenia is also associated with a higher risk of schizophrenia in first degree relatives. This raises the question of whether part of the genetic predisposition to schizophrenia may comprise an abnormal reaction to maternal influenza. ; link_to_subscribed_fulltext
