A biography of Cuban prose writer and dramatist Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda is presented. She was born on March 23, 1814 in Puerto Principle and was nicknamed Tula. She was highly popular and acknowledged as an outstanding author in her lifetime. Her works reflect the personal conflicts in her unconventional early life. She wrote numerous plays whose themes were historical, including "Munio Alfonso" and "Baltasar." In "La aventurera," she defends the fallen woman as a victim of a chauvinist society in an attempt to condemn social canons. |
