Levi-Montalcini received the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for the identification of the nerve growth factor (NGF) in 1986, sharing it with Stanley Cohen. She was born on April 22, 1909 in Turin, Italy. Giuseppe Levi, a professor of anatomy, antifascist activist and coreligionist, served as a role model and mentor to her. Between 1953 and 1959, she collaborated with Cohen and developed methods to extract NGF from snake venom and salivary glands of mice.
