الوصف: The objectives of this study were to examine parent and child perceptions of tic related and non-tic related impairment in youth diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome (TS). Participants were 85 parent/child dyads consisting of children diagnosed with TS, and 92 control parent/child dyads. All children were between the ages of 10 and 17. Both children and parents completed a checklist about the impact of tics and other psychological difficulties on family, school, and social functioning. The control group completed the same checklist regarding any impairment in those domains. In addition, a clinician administered a measure of tic severity to families while other demographic and clinical data were collected from TS children's medical chart. Results showed that impairment ratings from the TS group were significantly higher than impairment ratings from the control group. Moderate correlations were found between parents and TS children, whereas the control dyads exhibited slightly better agreement. TS children rated their impairment from tics as more significant when compared to their impairment from non-tic problems; in contrast, TS parents rated their child's impairment from non-tic problems as more significant than their child's impairment from tics. Consideration of both child and parent reports in measuring impairment is important as each informant may offer different, but useful, information.
