الوصف: Intermittent fasting (IF) is characterized by the abstention from food intake, with the duration varying according to the protocol, with time-restricted feeding being one of the most popular protocols. The effects of this intervention are still controversial, with evidence of fat loss, but also potential deterioration in physical performance. Furthermore, most IF studies focus on the treatment or prevention of chronic diseases, meaning there is a lack of research on healthy individuals, whether or not combined with exercise. Considering these aspects, the objective was to evaluate parameters related to physical performance and health, such as body composition, metabolic parameters like lipid, glucose, and hormonal profiles, as well as inflammatory and oxidative parameters in Wistar rats subjected to IF, with or without aerobic training. A total of 40 healthy Wistar rats, approximately 140 days old, were used in the study and randomized into four groups: sedentary controls (SC) and trained (TC), and those subjected to sedentary fasting (SIF) and trained fasting (TIF). The SIF and TIF groups followed a time-restricted fasting protocol (15 hours fasting, 9 hours feeding) for 4 weeks. Simultaneously, the trained groups engaged in treadmill running 5 times a week, with each session lasting 30 minutes. Performance tests were conducted at the beginning and end of the exercise protocol. At the end of the experiment, somatic parameters, food consumption, muscular histology, as well as lipid profile, insulin, leptin, alpha-1-acid glycoprotein, C-reactive protein (CRP), markers of muscle damage, and oxidative markers were evaluated. The TIF group showed body weight loss (-16g ± 6.12g) and lower lean mass (22.49%), LDL (43%), HOMA-IR (29%), and LDH (48%), as well as higher MDA (53%) and CAT (75%) compared to TC group, which had body weight (10.63g ± 7.76g), lean mass (25.78 ± 1.51), LDL (18.86 ± 1.60), HOMA-IR (21.79 ± 1.97), LDH (5582 ± 756), MDA (3.70 ± 0.19), and CAT (14.98 ± 2.41). The TIF group also exhibited reduced ...

الوصف: Several foods have been proposed to improve physical performance. Peppermint essential oil (PEO) is among these foods, but there is still no data in the literature on its use in athletes and long-term events, and the mechanisms involved are still not clear. Meanwhile, individual variability in the ergogenic response to time to exhaustion (TTE) has been observed, and a possible explanation may be the presence of genetic polymorphisms. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of PEO supplementation on the TTE of runners and whether the polymorphism in the CYP1A2 gene influences the responses to this supplementation. Forty male recreational runners (36.5±2.0 years; 24.3±0.6 kg/m2; 52.4±1.2 ml.kg.min) performed two procedures in a cross over model, one of which was experimental (500ml of water added with 0.05ml of PEO) and another isovolumetric placebo added with 0.05ml of mint essence. Thirty minutes later, they ran until exhaustion on a treadmill at 70% of VO2max, maintaining the intake of 100 ml of the experimental drink or placebo every 10 minutes during the first 40 minutes of the run. Before and every 10 minutes during exercise, body temperature and heart rate were recorded. Measurements of thermal sensation, thermal comfort and subjective perception of exertion were taken every 10 minutes during the physical test. Urine collection was done before and after exercise to record urinary volume and density. The sweating rate was calculated. Blood samples were taken at rest, immediately after the end of exercise and 2 hours after exercise, to measure Malondialdehyde and Total Oxidizing Capacity. The oral mucosa was collected for genotyping of the CYP1A2 gene. The first 14 runners ran 109.9 ± 7.4 minutes after ingesting the PEO and 98.5 ± 6.7 minutes in the placebo procedure, which was equivalent to a significant improvement of 11.6 ± 5.5% (p =0.009) (original article 1). For the total sample of 40 runners (original article 2), athletes ran 104.0 ± 5.1 minutes after ingesting PEO and 95.5 ± 3.9 ...

الوصف: Fruits are sources of yeast with biotechnological properties on which research has focused on the characteristics they can add to fermented products. Several fruits abundantly produced in the Caatinga Biome have been explored as a source of bioactive compounds, however they have been scarcely explored as a source of yeast with biotechnological potential, or even as matrices for the development of formulations derived from yeast fermentation. The present work aimed to evaluate the biotechnological potential of yeasts isolated from naturally fermented soursop and umbu-cajá. Yeasts were isolated from naturally fermented soursop and umbu-cajá. The isolates were identified via MALDI-TOF and the yeasts Hanseniaspora opuntiae 125, Issatchenkia terricola 129 and Hanseniaspora opuntiae 148 were selected for fermentation of soursop and umbu-cajá pulps based on their identification score and history of application in food. The fermented pulps were characterized regarding physical-chemical aspects (pH, soluble solids, and titratable acidity), sugar profile, organic acids, volatile and phenolic compounds (profile and bioaccessibility). The pulps showed changes in composition when subjected to fermentation by the isolated yeasts and the strains H. opuntiae 125 and I. terricola 129 maintained viability in the soursop sample even after simulated gastrointestinal conditions (≥ 6 log CFU/g). The fermentation of fruit pulps with yeast influenced the quantity and bioaccessibility of phenolics, demonstrating the occurrence of biotransformation of these compounds. In general, fermentation with yeast increased the amount of bioaccessible phenolic compounds, but the increase varied depending on the strain and fruit evaluated. The I. terricola 129 strain was chosen for in vitro tests to modulate the intestinal microbiota of hypertensive middle-aged adults due to the produced effects on the pulp during fermentation and its low ethanol production. The relative abundance of bacterial groups was evaluated using fluorescence in situ ...

الوصف: Dietary patterns that include regular consumption of prebiotic compounds are capable of modulating the composition and metabolism of the human intestinal microbiota, playing an important role in the health of the host. Red beet (Beta vulgaris L.) is an important vegetable species with a considerable supply of nutrients and bioactive compounds, especially dietary fiber, phenolic compounds and betalains. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prebiotic potential of freeze-dried products obtained from different parts of red beet by checking their effects on the growth and metabolism of probiotic strains (Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-05, Lacticaseibacillus casei L-26 and Limosilactobacillus fermentum 296) and the human colonic microbiota under in vitro conditions. The tests were carried out with freeze-dried parts of the root (FDBR) and stalk/leaf (FDBSL) of the red beet cultivar Early wonder. FDBR and FDBSL were analyzed to determine their nutritional composition and physicochemical parameters. Next, Lactobacillus strains were exposed to simulated conditions of the gastrointestinal tract in the presence of FDBR and FDBSL, when aspects related to cell viability and physiological functionality, total antioxidant capacity and total phenolic compounds were evaluated after the three main phases of digestion (mouth, stomach and intestine). In a second stage, new samples of FDBR and FDBSL were subjected to simulated gastrointestinal digestion and the digestion product was evaluated in fermentation trials using them as the sole carbon source for the cultivation of probiotic strains and to assess the modulation of the colonic microbiota using fecal inoculum. The prebiotic activity score was calculated and microbial metabolic activity was monitored by determining pH and the content of sugars and organic acids in the different cultivation systems. The phenolic profile and total antioxidant capacity were also monitored during the simulated digestion and fermentation phases with fecal inoculum. FDBR and FDBSL showed high ...

الوصف: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-Cov-2) causes Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) which is characterized by an inflammatory process, due to an increase in the release of cytokines, such as interleukin-6, in addition to hypoalbuminemia. On the other hand, vitamin D can help control the inflammatory process, however, this disease still leaves sequelae such as fatigue or muscle weakness. In this context, this research aimed to evaluate the relationship of serum vitamin D levels with the inflammatory and biochemical profile in individuals with COVID-19 and muscle strength in individuals after COVID-19. This research is characterized by being a cross-sectional study carried out in sequential sections between the months of June and August 2020. Individuals over 18 years of age, who were hospitalized with COVID-19 in the referenced network of the metropolitan region of João, participated in the study. Pessoa, the Dom José Maria Pires Metropolitan Hospital. Data collection was divided into two sections, the first of which was performed with 253 individuals, and consisted of sample characterization and biochemical analysis (calcium, PTH, albumin, liver and kidney function, blood count, total cholesterol and fractions, glycated hemoglobin and blood glucose). fasting), inflammatory parameters (Interleukin-6 and Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio) and serum levels of vitamin D. COVID-19. Data were expressed as percentage, mean and standard deviation. To assess the normality of the data, the Kolmogorov-Smirnnov test was performed (p<0.05). الوصف: Diabetic Retinopathy is a microvascular complication of Diabetes Mellitus and is one of the main causes of blindness in the working-age population. Retinopathy is closely related to the control of glycemic targets, the duration of diabetes and other complex clinical and genetic aspects that are still not fully understood. Vitamin D, the adipokine Adiponectin and their respective genetic variants, namely VDR, ADIPOQ and ADIPOR1, play important roles in the context of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and its complications and, for this reason, are the subject of interest and study. The objective of this work was to analyze the association between the genotypes of the polymorphisms located in the VDR (rs1544410), Adiponectin (rs266729) and adiponectin receptor 1 (rs7539542) genes and Diabetic Retinopathy with the clinical stages of the disease, clinical, biochemical, anthropometric, physical activity and food consumption. Patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, with at least 5 years of diagnosis were recruited and submitted to retinal examination for clinical classification (with or without retinopathy and disease stage) generating the following experimental groups: without retinopathy (n= 139), with retinopathy (n=221) the second group being subdivided into non-proliferative retinopathy (RDNP) n=144 and proliferative retinopathy (RDP) n=77. Biochemical parameters (blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, creatinine), anthropometric data, food intake and physical activity were collected and molecular analyzes were performed to determine the genotypes of the polymorphisms of interest. The genotypic and allelic distribution of the polymorphisms studied did not differ between groups without retinopathy compared to those with retinopathy, RDNP and RDP for all genes. However, the presence of the b allele of rs1544410 (Bb+bb) of the VDR gene was associated with higher levels of fasting glucose (p=0.04) and use of insulin therapy (p=0.01) in the group of patients with retinopathy ...

الوصف: Chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are responsible for more than half of deaths worldwide; specifically in Brazil, for approximately 70% of deaths. Despite the various policies aimed at reducing its prevalence, the number of individuals affected by such diseases is still high; and considering a country like Brazil, where most of the population depends on the Unified Health System (SUS), NCDs generate high costs for the country. Thus, this study aimed to carry out a narrative review of the literature, analyzing works that evaluated the costs of NCDs for the country in recent years, as well as evaluating some of the existing public policies aimed at reducing them. For that, recent scientific works were searched in the databases: MEDLINE, LILACS BIREME, SCIELO, PUBMED and Google Scholar. Being considered for this study the direct and indirect costs, when available, of the treatments of diabetes mellitus, systemic arterial hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and cancers; main chronic diseases that affect the Brazilian population. Cost data from eleven studies were analyzed. Such studies demonstrate that in recent years there has been an increase in the direct costs of NCDs for the SUS, especially regarding hospitalizations, emphasizing the need to act more efficiently in primary care. Several public policies aim at reducing the prevalence of NCDs and, consequently, their costs to the State; such as Family Health Strategy , the HIPERDIA program – developed by it –, the National Immunization Program, the development of the Food Guide for the Brazilian Population, the resolutions of the National Health Surveillance Agency aimed at controlling advertising food and drink for children and teenagers; in addition to the formalized agreements with the Brazilian Food Industry Association to reducing sodium levels in food; the new measures to be adapted in food labeling, the development of the Health Academy Program and the establishment of the National Tobacco Control Program. However, despite the various ...

الوصف: Performing physical activity correctly and consistently is a primary aspect associated with the improvement in the quality of life, acting upon the mental health and rectifying the body´s composition along with preventing chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Despite of that knowledge, a large part of the population aspires, with the practice of physical activity, only the aesthetic benefit. Therefore, there was an increase in the demand for modalities that provide the purpose to fit into a beauty standard, by way of illustration, the bodybuilding. During its practice, the energy expenditure is associated with the interaction of different variables, and for this reason the follow-up of a nutritionist is fundamental for the individual to obtain maximum performance in training and manage to change his body composition. At the outset, an evaluation of the body composition must be done to measure the individual’s body fat level and classify their nutritional status. On that premise, the objective of this research is to evaluate the body satisfaction and the nutritional status of bodybuilders in addition to their relationship with the presence of a dietary prescription and taking the consumption of food supplementation in consideration into the bargain. The sample is composed of 30 individuals, including men and women bodybuilding practitioners. A questionnaire was used to assess body satisfaction as well as the consumption of food supplementation and its indication. Simultaneously, an anthropometric assessment was performed to measure weight, height and skinfolds. As for the nutritional status, it was identified that through the body mass index (BMI) all the women were eutrophic, the same did not happen when classifying by the percentage of body fat (). When analyzing the consumption of supplements, it was observed in the sample that whey protein and creatine were the most used. As for the indication of the use of supplements, most were not guided by a nutritionist, among these, a large part used it on their ...

الوصف: The problem in food is not only hunger and malnutrition, but also the concept of consuming enough calories, but not enough quality and quantity of nutrients. Food and Nutrition Insecurity is mostly associated with variable demographic and socioeconomic income, especially family income. In Brazil, there are 125.2 million people in AI, and 55.2% of Brazilian households demonstrated the need for some resident to stop studying to contribute to the family income, a need that occurred because of the pandemic. Since university residents are a low-income population that needs assistance to remain in the higher education institution, the objective of this study was to describe the levels of food and nutritional insecurity in university students residing in university residences in João Pessoa - PB. A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out using a quantitative approach, initiated by an invited guest, consisting of 44 undergraduate students over 18 years of age of both sexes. Data were analyzed from descriptive and analytical statistics using the chi-square test. As a result, 80% of the population was experiencing Food Insecurity, with a high prevalence of moderately (25%) and severe (43.18%) FI. There was a high level of distrust regarding the quality of the water, 75% of people do not consider it appropriate. When dealing with the period without offering food from the university restaurant, 43.18% claimed that the consumption of vegetables consumed, while 50% claimed that the consumption of ultra-processed products increased and 52.27% believed that changes in food affected academic performance. There were no statistically significant associations between sociodemographic variables and AI levels. The results showed the demand for student assistance at the Federal University of Paraíba and the need for studies on the water issue and its relationship with AI ; Os problemas na alimentação não consiste só em fome e desnutrição, mas também ao conceito de consumir calorias suficientes, mas sem ...
