مستخلص: Although tumors and infection are rare causes of low back pain, be alert for ‘red flags’ (such as weight loss or fever) that signal their presence. Radiographic and imaging studies are usually unnecessary during the initial evaluation, but plain films may be helpful if the patient reports no improvement after a few months of conservative treatment. Sciatica is the typical symptom of herniated disk. The hallmark of spinal stenosis, more common among older persons, is pain after prolonged standing or walking but comfort while sitting. Epidural corticosteroid injections may temporarily relieve pain that is caused by nerve compression by a herniated disk or spinal stenosis. When considering surgical management, note the favorable natural history of herniated disk syndromes and the less favorable natural history of spinal stenosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
