مستخلص: This article describes how art therapy can benefit patients with somatic complaints and those suffering from functional gastrointestinal disorders such as dyspepsia. Some psychosomatic disorders may be linked to narcissistic identification and/or depressive components. Mushatt (1989) depicts the essence of narcissism as a residue of the earliest symbiotic state, shown when body and external world are one. She points out that such narcissistic phenomena are often seen in psychosomatic patients, who seem to show failure in resolving the separation-individuation process. This specific somatic disorder would be a manifestation of an impasse in object relations, determined by the narcissistic component. This narcissistic character implies the existence of a disordered process of identification. The nonverbal approach and process of art therapy enable a better understanding of body language (somatothymia). This paper demonstrates how art therapy gives external form or voice to emotions and encourages verbal expression. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
