مستخلص: Temporal muscle thickness (TMT) is a new potential MRI biomarker, which has shown prognostic relevance in neuro-oncology. We aim at investigating the potential prognostic value of TMT in patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). We retrospectively evaluated 30 ALS patients, whose clinical, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Electrodiagnostic testing (EDX) data were available, in comparison to age-matched 30 healthy subjects. TMT calculated on T1-weighted MR images was significantly lower in ALS patients than in healthy subjects (p < 0.001), correlating with the ALS Functional Rating Scale (FRS) (p:0.018) and compound motor action potential (CMAP) (p:0.012) in the patients group. Multivariate analysis of overall survival (OS) showed that the only parameters that remained significant were TMT (p:0.002, OR 0.45, 95%vCI: 0.28–0.75) and ALS FRS-R (p:0.023, OR: 0.80, 95%CI: 0.67–0.92). TMT seems to be a promising surrogate biomarker of survival and functional status in ALS. Our data deserve further investigations in multicenter and prospective trials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

الوصف: The recently developed technique of Brillouin ultraviolet scattering is used to measure phonon dispersion and damping in the prototypical strong glass v-SiO2. Results on the low temperature (T similar to 10-100 K) sound attenuation at a frequency of similar to 66GHz are presented. The comparison between a model, which takes into account dynamical processes (thermally activated relaxations and the interaction with the bath of thermal vibrations), and the experimental data indicates the presence of a strong static contribution in the region explored by Ultraviolet radiation, supporting the presence of a transition between static and dynamic attenuation mechanisms at a frequency of similar to 100GHz.

مستخلص: Through observational analysis, the present study examined the temporal relationship between the verbalization of unmet existential needs and levels of expressed emotional arousal. Participants were 39 undergraduate students with self-critical tendencies who completed an emotion-focused two-chair intervention for self-criticism during which they enacted their inner critic. Participants were subsequently guided to verbally address their inner critic at two distinct timepoints: (1) an initial reaction and (2) a primed reaction that was preceded by a written priming task intended to facilitate assertive anger and the verbalization of unmet existential needs. Two groups were identified: (a) participants who verbalized an unmet existential need during the primed reaction (n = 24), and (b) participants who did not verbalize an unmet need during the primed reaction (n = 15). Results showed a significant interaction whereby the change in expressed arousal from the initial to primed reaction depended on whether participants expressed an unmet need during the primed reaction (ηp2 =.12). Findings suggest that moderate levels of expressed arousal may precede the articulation of unmet needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: We explore how consumers' willingness to buy is driven by perceptions on potential risks and potential benefits for different types of nano-inside applications. Our empirical approach follows a two-stage estimation: the first stage focuses on consumers' perceptions toward risks and benefits; the second stage quantifies how perceived benefits and risks influence the willingness to buy. We found that perceived benefits are major drivers of the willingness to buy, whereas the fear of potential risks has a limited impact: we found stronger results for younger and more educated respondents, who should be targeted by marketing and information campaigns. Notably, the beliefs are very similar across nano-inside applications. The studies on consumers perceptions toward benefits and risks of nano-applications in the food industry fall short of providing evidence on consumers' attitudes toward nano-inside applications in several national contexts. Our analysis fills this gap and allows us to conclude on the Italian market. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: In the famous painting La Leçon Clinique à la Salpêtrière (A Clinical Lesson at the Salpêtrière) by André Brouillet (1857–1914), the neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot (1825–1893) is shown delivering a clinical lecture in front of a large audience. A hysterical patient, Marie Wittman (known as "Blanche"; 1859–1912) is leaning against Charcot's pupil, Joseph Babinski (1857–1932). Lying on the table close to Charcot are some medical instruments, traditionally identified as a Duchenne electrotherapy apparatus and a reflex hammer. A closer look at these objects reveals that they should be identified instead as a Du Bois-Reymond apparatus with a Grenet cell (bichromate cell) battery and its electrodes. These objects reflect the widespread practice of electrotherapeutic faradization at the Salpêtrière. Furthermore, they allow us to understand the moment depicted in the painting: contrary to what is sometimes claimed, Blanche has not been represented during a hysterical attack, but during a moment of hypnotically induced lethargy. الوصف: The aim of this study was to evaluate if there were alterations in FSH plasma levels in female outdoor workers (traffic policewomen and drivers) exposed to chemical urban stressors vs. control group. After excluding subjects with main confounding factors, traffic policewomen, drivers and indoor workers were matched by age, working life, socioeconomic status, marital status, menstrual cycle day, age of menarche, habitual consumption of Italian coffee and soy. A total of 129 female subjects were included in the study: Some 63 workers studied during proliferative phase and 66 during secretory phase of menstrual cycle. Proliferative phase of menstrual cycle: FSH mean values were significantly higher in traffic policewomen compared to controls (p < 0.05). Results suggest that in outdoor workers exposed to urban chemical stressors there are alterations in FSH levels; therefore FSH may be used as an early biological marker, valuable for the group, used in occupational set.
