The prostaglandins are members of the eicosanoid family and derived from arachidonic acid. These local hormones coordinate responses to circulating factors which regulate their biosynthesis. They are involved in many physiological and pathological processes including hemostasis, thrombosis, parturition, gastrointestinal secretion, smooth muscle tone and inflammation.
